James Madison at App State

7:00 PM ET, Kidd Brewer Stadium, Boone
James Madison is a 10.5-point road favorite and the total is 56.5. My play is James Madison -10.5.
Picture it: a sold-out Kidd Brewer Stadium on Family Weekend, 55 degrees on a mountain Thursday night, and the only 7-0 team in America jogging out of the visitors’ tunnel on five days’ rest. If you were drawing up a trap game, you’d draw this one. I’ve looked at it from every angle, and I’m laying the points anyway.
Boone has bitten JMU before. This version has thicker skin.
The history is real. JMU is 3-8 all-time at App State, and the last time the Dukes came to Boone, in 2024, they left with a 34-20 loss. App leads the all-time series 14-6. But history didn’t play in last year’s meeting, a 58-10 JMU blowout in Harrisonburg, and it won’t line up at tackle on Thursday.
What will show up is the nation’s only unbeaten Group of Six team, the defending Sun Belt champion, riding a 12-game conference regular-season win streak under a first-year coach with a chip on his shoulder. Billy Napier got fired at Florida and landed in Harrisonburg. “I have a lot to prove,” he said. “I’m highly motivated as a result of the things that have happened in the past.” So far, he’s proving it at 6-1 against the spread.
Pettaway is about to have a big night
This game gets decided where JMU is strongest and App is softest. The Dukes run for 212.5 yards a game against FBS opponents, 12th in the country, at 5.3 yards a carry. George Pettaway, the ex-North Carolina back, has 767 yards and four straight 100-yard games. App State’s run defense, meanwhile, lets 47% of opponents’ carries stay “on schedule,” meaning the offense gains enough yardage to stay ahead of the down and distance. That ranks 101st nationally.
And App can’t count on its pass rush to bail out the run defense. The Mountaineers get home on just 4.29% of opponent dropbacks, 109th in FBS, while JMU’s quarterbacks get sacked only 3.85% of the time. Starter Camden Coleman has 13 touchdowns and one interception, and JC Evans comes in on the money downs. “They both deserve to play, and they’re both capable of playing well,” Napier said. App will have to figure out both of them.

App State’s quarterback plan is written in pencil
Malachi Singleton (ankle) is listed as questionable on Monday night’s official Sun Belt availability report. He hurt it in the 10-3 home loss to Old Dominion, a game in which App scored three points. He started at Coastal last Friday, went 12-of-14 for 151 yards, fumbled a snap late in the first half, and never came back. RotoWire couldn’t say whether that was the ankle or a benching. Henry Hasselbeck (yes, Matt’s son) took over and was terrific with his legs, running 21 times for 125 yards in a 35-32 comeback win. He also threw his first career touchdown pass.
That Coastal rushing night (253 yards as a team) is the best counterargument to everything I’m saying. It’s also one night. Over the full season, Game on Paper still ranks App’s ground game 125th in efficiency per carry, and now it runs into a JMU defense that holds opponents to 3.5 yards a carry and ranks 30th in stopping runs from staying on schedule. Hasselbeck can scramble. Doing it against this front for four quarters is a different job.
The number should be bigger
SP+ has JMU 28th and App 96th, a 17.4-point gap before home field. After you give App its home bump, that’s roughly a two-touchdown game, and the spread is 10.5. Both teams have played soft schedules, so neither rating is padded relative to the other. App’s way to win, a coin-flip game in the last two minutes, needs JMU to cough the ball up. The Dukes throw an interception on 0.57% of their passes, sit 7th in turnover margin, have forced multiple takeaways in six straight games, and score on 96.8% of their red-zone trips. They don’t hand out gifts.
What scares me about Thursday. The spot is lousy. JMU played Saturday and App played Friday, so the home team gets an extra day. App State has lived in one-score finishes all year and is 2-0 against the spread as an underdog. JMU’s offensive line is banged up, with Frankie Tinilau doubtful and Deacon Rawls questionable, and that’s the unit that powers my favorite matchup. The Dukes also needed everything to escape Georgia Southern 27-24 on Oct. 10, their only non-cover, and they’re only 1-1 ATS as a road favorite. If Singleton is ruled out and the line jumps to 13 or higher, don’t chase it. I’d play this up to -11.5.
Projected score: James Madison 34, App State 20. The Dukes lean on Pettaway, the crowd goes quiet sometime in the third quarter, and JMU heads home 8-0.
