Houston at Utah

10:15 PM ET, Rice-Eccles Stadium, Salt Lake City, UT
Utah is a 6.5-point favorite over Houston with a total of 56.5. My play is Over 56.5.
College GameDay starts in Salt Lake City at 7 a.m. Mountain time, and kickoff isn’t until 8:15 that night. That’s more than 13 hours of hype for one game, and I think the scoreboard ends up living up to it. Houston has never lost to Utah in five tries, Utah has the longest winning streak in the country, and both teams score about 40 points a game. Pick a side if you want. I’m betting on the points.
Houston’s offense is the best in the country nobody talks about. Adjust for opponents, and the Cougars rank first nationally in expected points per play, meaning they pile up more value on an average snap than any offense in college football. Conner Weigman has 20 touchdown passes against two interceptions, and he just threw for a career-high 343 yards and five scores in a 35-32 win over Oklahoma State. Houston also converts third and fourth downs better than anyone in the country, and drives that don’t die keep adding points.
The weapons are everywhere. Amare Thomas has six touchdown catches, and tight end Patrick Overmyer leads every tight end in FBS with seven, including four in one game at Kansas State. Even Morgan Scalley, who built Utah’s defense, sounded realistic this week: “You may not make him uncomfortable,” he said of Weigman.
And the Cougars’ defense is a welcome mat against the pass. This is the part that makes the Over work. Houston ranks 115th nationally in expected points allowed per pass and close to 100th in passing success rate allowed. Oklahoma State racked up 499 yards at 8.5 yards a play last week and scored 29 points after halftime. Houston does stuff the run, allowing just 82.6 rushing yards a game, but that only pushes Utah toward the matchup it wants anyway.

Devon Dampier gets his chance to air it out. Colorado packed seven and eight defenders into the box to slow Wayshawn Parker last week, and Utah still put up 409 yards in a 27-24 win that felt like an off night. Dampier made five big-time throws in that game, according to PFF, and Utah’s top receiver seems to change every week. Creed Whittemore had 88 yards on three catches at Colorado, and Braden Pegan added 86 yards and two scores. If Houston clogs the middle like Colorado did, Dampier will have one-on-ones on the outside against a secondary that gives up chunks.
Utah’s offense is also a puzzle on its own. Willie Fritz spent his press conference trying to explain it. “Offensively they do a bunch of stuff. I mean, a bunch of stuff,” he said, listing two-quarterback looks, option, halfback passes and double passes. That’s a lot to handle in a stadium as loud as Rice-Eccles on a “dark mode” night, and the Utes finish in the red zone, scoring on more than 91% of their trips.
Both teams have been printing overs. Houston is 5-2 to the Over and Utah is 4-2. Utah is averaging 40.2 points and 486.5 yards a game, both top-10 nationally, and Houston is right behind at 39.3 points. SP+ rates both offenses among the best in the country, and projecting each one against the other’s defense lands right around 60 points before you even add in the home crowd.
The Under’s best argument wears red. Utah’s defense is legit. The Utes allow a success rate under 37%, sixth-best in the country, and opponents complete barely half their passes. If Scalley’s group plays its best game of the year and Utah leans on the run to shorten the game, this could turn into a 27-20 grind. Utah could also be without starting right tackle Kelvin Obot (ankle), which matters for Dampier’s protection. And Utah hasn’t faced a ranked team yet, so their numbers came against a softer schedule. I’d play this up to 58.5, and I’d pass at 59.5.
Final score projection: Utah 34, Houston 28. Dampier throws over the top, Weigman keeps answering, and the last score lands well after midnight on the East Coast.
The Pick: Over 56.5
