BYU at UCF

3:30 PM ET, Acrisure Bounce House, Orlando
BYU is a 6.5-point road favorite with a total of 43.5, and my play is BYU -6.5.
Everybody in the country has circled this one as the hangover game. The Cougars just beat Notre Dame on a touchdown with 1:47 left, shot to No. 2 in the AP poll for the first time in school history, and now fly across the country to play a UCF team that has had two weeks to get ready. The trap is so obvious that it has stopped being a trap. The market has already priced it in, and I think it went too far.
The line already bought the hangover
This number opened at BYU -9.5. It has been bet down three full points, right through the key number of 7, for a 6-0 team facing a 3-3 team that has lost two straight. That is the letdown story getting cashed in before kickoff. Kalani Sitake isn’t buying it. “Just keep the rat poison away from the boys,” he said Monday. “We’re fine.” The Cougars are 6-0 against the spread, and they have not needed style points to get there. They won 17-10 at TCU. UCF beat that same TCU team 21-13 at home.
The other thing the market seems to be shrugging off is that UCF is still without starting quarterback Alonza Barnett III. The James Madison transfer hurt his hamstring at Pitt on Sept. 12 and isn’t expected to start, so Keyone Jenkins gets his fifth straight start. Jenkins has been fine. He’s completing 70 percent of his throws and dropped four touchdowns on Oklahoma State. The Knights still lost that game by 14, and the backup now draws the best defense he’s seen all year.

UCF’s offense is asking for trouble against this defense
BYU gives up 15.2 points a game and 4.42 yards a play, which is top-15 stuff nationally. The Cougars are also stingy on a snap-by-snap basis, ranking 20th in success rate allowed, meaning offenses rarely pick up the yardage they need on a given down. Their run defense allows just 86.2 yards a game, and their corners just held CJ Carr to 55 percent passing and 5.3 yards per attempt.
UCF’s offense sits 98th nationally in success rate and 98th in EPA per play, which measures how much each snap moves the needle toward points. The passing game ranks 105th in yards per game. That is not an offense built to come from behind or to string together 12-play drives against a defense that tackles like this one.
On the other side, BYU’s offense ranks 15th in success rate and 18th in yards per play. Bear Bachmeier, fresh off AP National Player of the Week, makes the whole thing go with his legs as much as his arm. He has 284 rushing yards to go with 1,257 through the air, and he ran for two scores against the Irish. The Cougars run for 206.7 yards a game, and UCF’s pass defense ranks 103rd in yards allowed. If the Knights load up to stop the run, Bachmeier has room to throw.
The Bounce House is the one thing that scares me
The Knights have been a different team at home. They’re 3-0 in Orlando and 0-3 on the road, and their run defense is legit, ranking 27th in EPA allowed per rush. If they can make BYU one-dimensional, this gets tight. Both teams play slow, too. BYU ranks 114th in plays per game and UCF is 122nd, and the forecast calls for 17 mph winds. Fewer possessions means a 6.5-point spread is harder to clear. There’s also the human element. It’s a cross-country trip, one week after what many called the most impactful regular-season win in program history.
Still, I keep coming back to the same picture. One team has a quarterback playing like one of the best players in the country and a defense that has won every week. The other is starting its backup and can’t stay on schedule. BYU beat UCF 41-21 last season and 37-24 in Orlando in 2024. The Cougars don’t need a blowout. They need a two-score cushion late, and their defense is built to protect one.
Projected score: BYU 27, UCF 16. The Cougars pull away in the second half while Jenkins runs out of answers.
The Pick: BYU -6.5
