Philadelphia Eagles at Washington Commanders

The Washington Commanders are 5.5-point favorites over the Philadelphia Eagles, with the total at 40.5. My play is Eagles +5.5.
Before the season, this game was penciled in as Philadelphia -1.5. Now it’s Washington -5.5, a seven-point swing toward a team that’s won one game all year. I get why. Jalen Hurts is on injured reserve with blood clots, the Eagles have lost five straight, and Tanner McKee has looked like a backup quarterback. But the Commanders haven’t earned the right to lay this many points to anybody.
Yes, the Eagles are a mess
I won’t sugarcoat it. Philadelphia ranks 30th in offensive EPA, which tracks how much each play helps a team score, and 30th in success rate. Only 4% of its passes go for 20 yards or more, the lowest rate in the league. McKee has been well below average on a per-dropback basis in his starts, and his fourth-quarter interception helped Dallas pull away in Monday’s 38-21 loss. That game was tied 21-21 in the third quarter before the Cowboys ran off 17 straight points and more than 200 yards on the ground. Vic Fangio’s run defense ranks 31st by EPA, and that’s a real problem.
The Eagles are also 1-6 against the spread, and Nick Sirianni is now 0-8 straight up as a home underdog. Nobody wants to touch them. That’s exactly why the number is inflated.

Washington is 1-4-1 for a reason
Here’s what the market is skipping over. Washington is 0-3-1 in games Jayden Daniels has started. Daniels has been sharp, with five touchdowns and zero interceptions, but he’s playing in a brace on his left elbow that limits how far he can extend his arm. He has also made some head-scratching decisions late in games, including throwing the ball away on fourth-and-2 in the 23-17 loss at San Francisco. Worse, his supporting cast is thinning out. Terry McLaurin is done after tearing his patellar tendon in that game, top running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt is on IR, and Daniels has played all four of his games without left tackle Laremy Tunsil.
The Commanders’ defense isn’t bailing anyone out, either. It ranks 25th in EPA allowed, last in run success rate allowed, and opponents have scored touchdowns on 81.8% of their red-zone trips. That’s the worst mark in this matchup by a mile, and it gives even a limited Eagles offense a path to points if Saquon Barkley (questionable) is out there.
TeamRankings’ power ratings have these teams nearly even, with Philadelphia 24th and Washington 26th. Even giving Washington full credit for home field and the bye, that’s about a field goal, not 5.5. In a game with a total of 40.5, every one of those extra points matters. About 72% of the money is on Washington, and I’m happy to fade it.
Why I could be wrong
McKee might just be this bad. Philadelphia’s rating over its last five games is the worst in the league, and if Washington’s run game exploits that soft front the way Dallas did, this could get away from the Eagles by the third quarter. DeVonta Smith’s hamstring is another worry, and a short week after Monday night doesn’t help. If Daniels takes care of the ball again and the Commanders finally finish drives, laying 5.5 looks cheap.
Still, I expect a grimy, low-scoring prime-time game that comes down to the final possession. Commanders 20, Eagles 17.
