Boston Celtics at Orlando Magic

Look at Orlando’s injury report and you’ll see five names: Paolo Banchero, Jalen Suggs, Jonathan Isaac, Noah Penda and Izaiyah Nelson, all ruled out. That’s the franchise forward, the defensive tone-setter at guard, and a big chunk of the wing depth gone before Sean Sweeney, in his first season as head coach, is even two weeks into the regular season. Meanwhile, Boston rolls into its first road game since opening night with four straight wins and a roster that’s starting to look like it knows who it is.
The post-Brown Celtics are scoring like nothing changed. Trading Jaylen Brown to Philadelphia for Paul George felt like the end of an era this summer. Five games in, the offense has barely noticed. Boston is scoring about six points per 100 possessions better than the league average, and Jayson Tatum is running the show at 27.6 points and 7.8 assists a night. His jumper hasn’t even shown up yet, and the Celtics are still winning comfortably. George gives them a legit second scorer, and Payton Pritchard has turned into a bench flamethrower, dropping 28 and then 30 on Chicago this week. “I like pushing him, I like coaching him, and I love him like a brother,” Joe Mazzulla said of Pritchard after Friday’s 125-111 win.
Orlando is running two players and a prayer. With Banchero out four to six weeks with a high ankle sprain, the Magic are leaning on Franz Wagner and Desmond Bane. Friday in Toronto that worked: Bane hit for 28, Wagner set season highs with 26 points and 11 assists, and Orlando got hot from deep to win 121-114. Two nights earlier, in the same building, the Magic shot 10 of 35 from three and lost by 30. That’s the problem with this version of Orlando. When the shots don’t fall, there’s no backup plan. The Magic grab just 21.6% of their own misses, way below the league’s 27.3%, so they don’t get many second chances to bail out a cold night.

The turnover tax. This is where I think the game gets decided. Orlando coughs it up on 15.3% of its trips, which is worse than average, and Boston’s defense forces turnovers on 15.5% of opponent possessions. The Celtics punished Chicago for 39 points off 25 turnovers last Monday. Orlando, without Suggs and now handing the keys to Anthony Black (who has played well, with 17 points and 10 assists Friday), is exactly the kind of team that gives a ball-hawking defense those easy runouts. Add a Magic defense allowing 118.0 per 100 possessions, and the math gets ugly fast.
Why I could be wrong. Boston’s 4-1 start has come against a soft schedule. Two of the wins came against a Bulls team that has now lost four straight, and the Celtics needed overtime to get past Brooklyn. All four wins came at TD Garden, and Celtics Wire points out Boston has won just once at the Kia Center since 2023. Both teams are also on the front end of a back-to-back (Boston plays in Houston on Monday, and Orlando hosts Washington), and Mitchell Robinson is listed as questionable for rest. If Mazzulla trims minutes or the Magic catch another Friday-in-Toronto shooting night (18 of 34 from three), 6.5 points disappears quickly. I’m fine laying it up to -7.5, but I’d pass at -8.
Projected score: Celtics 117, Magic 107. Boston’s ball pressure and depth wear down a short-handed Orlando rotation by the fourth quarter.
