No. 14 Miami Hurricanes vs No. 1 Florida Gators
Monday, November 2, 2026
6:00 PM ET, Benchmark International Arena (Tampa, FL)

Florida is a 4.5-point favorite over Miami with a total of 160.5, and my play is Florida -4.5.

Of all the buildings to start a season in, the Gators picked the one that broke their hearts. Benchmark International Arena is where top-seeded Florida got bounced by Iowa in the second round last March. Eight months later, the preseason No. 1 walks back into the same rink on opening night, and the opponent is an in-state program with nothing to lose and a whole lot to prove.

Miami deserves the hype. Jai Lucas took a 7-24 team, brought in a roster with zero holdovers, and won 26 games. Now he has the No. 14 ranking, a top-10 transfer class and Malik Reneau back for a fifth year after a temporary injunction. That’s a real team. But it’s a real team that has played zero meaningful minutes together, and it’s walking into a buzzsaw that brings almost everybody back.

Same Gators, same giants

Florida returns four starters and 81.8% of its scoring. That’s rare in the portal era, and on opening night it’s gold. Thomas Haugh is the preseason SEC Player of the Year. Rueben Chinyelu is the reigning Naismith Defensive Player of the Year. Alex Condon is a 6-11 forward who put up 19 points and 10 rebounds on Miami the last time these two met, a comfortable Gators win in Jacksonville a year ago.

The computers agree with the eye test. KenPom’s preseason ratings have Florida No. 2 in the country with the No. 1 offense. Miami sits at No. 22. In my book, a 20-spot gap on a neutral floor is worth more than four and a half points.

Lucas knows exactly where this gets decided

Lucas, who played his freshman season in Gainesville, didn’t sugarcoat it this week. “I don’t know if you’ve seen Florida,” he said, “but those guys are huge. … They fly and they go to the glass, so we’ve got to clean up our blockouts, our rebounds, our fouling.”

He’s right to worry. Florida led the nation in rebounding margin last season at plus-14.7 and grabbed 43.3% of its own misses, second-best in the country. Simply put, the Gators get a second shot on almost half their misses. Todd Golden’s game plan is the same three-step recipe he always uses: “defending them at a high level and trying to win the glass and value the basketball.”

Miami has bodies to throw at it. Georgia transfer Somto Cyril blocks shots and rebounds, and he has history here. He was ejected at Gainesville last January for throwing a forearm at Chinyelu’s face. Fun subplot. But Cyril, Reneau, Horizon League Player of the Year DeSean Goode and freshman Caleb Gaskins have never boxed out together against a frontcourt like this. Blockouts are a habit. Habits take weeks.

The case against me

Florida can’t shoot. The Gators hit 31.2% from three last season, which ranked 315th in the country. In their exhibition loss to Baylor they went 4 of 29 from deep. If the bricks show up again, a 4.5-point cushion gets thin fast.

The bench is the other worry. Baylor and Stetson reserves outscored Florida’s 61-7 across the two exhibitions. Boogie Fland sat out the Stetson game with headaches. Golden expects him to play, but he’s not 100% guaranteed. Miami also looked dangerous in its tune-up, hanging 109 points on a preseason Top 25 Vanderbilt team, with Villanova transfer Acaden Lewis running the show.

I’m still laying it. Florida has the continuity, the size and a crowd in Tampa that should lean orange and blue. When the shots aren’t falling, the Gators go get their misses back. Miami’s new pieces will figure it out by January. Tonight they’re meeting each other and the Gators’ front line at the same time.

Projected score: Florida 83, Miami 74
