No. 15 Gonzaga vs Purdue
Monday, November 2, 2026
7:30 PM ET, T-Mobile Arena (Las Vegas)
Gonzaga is a 4.5-point favorite over Purdue on a neutral floor, and the total sits at 154.5. My play is the Under 154.5 (-112).
Here’s how the two teams spent their final dress rehearsals. Purdue went 2-of-25 from three in a 76-53 exhibition beatdown at UConn. Gonzaga missed 11 straight threes and finished 6-of-28 in an exhibition loss at Arkansas. Now the market wants a mid-150s game out of them in Game 1, under the bright lights of the Strip, on TNT. I’ll pass on that and take the other side of the counter.
Two blue bloods, two brand-new paint jobs
Purdue is not the Purdue you remember. Braden Smith is with the Pacers, Trey Kaufman-Renn is at Kansas, and Fletcher Loyer and Oscar Cluff are gone too. Most of last year’s 81.6 points per game walked out the door with them. CJ Cox is the lone returning starter, Omer Mayer takes over the point after a year as Smith’s understudy, and Princeton transfer Caden Pierce brings the grown-up minutes.
Matt Painter knows it. After the UConn loss, he said his team has to “get into what we’re doing earlier,” adding, “if you play to the end of the shot clock against some really good teams, you’re going to have some really poor possessions.” That’s a coach who expects long, ugly possessions for a while. GoldandBlack.com put it simply: this Purdue team doesn’t have a single offensive alpha.
Gonzaga’s rebuild is louder: 11 new players around just four returners. Braden Huff is back from the knee injury that ended his junior season, and he looked like himself with 19 points and 11 boards against Arkansas. But the shooting problem that has followed this program for two years hasn’t left. The Zags shot 33.3% from deep last season, and their best shooter, Chauncey Wiggins, is still sitting out after his bid for a restraining order came up empty in a Waco courtroom. “He’s far and away our best shooter and we could’ve used some 3s tonight,” Mark Few said after Arkansas.

A 7-footer who erases layups changes the math
The thing that makes me comfortable on the Under is what Gonzaga added on defense. Massamba Diop, the 7-foot-1 transfer from Arizona State, blocked 2.1 shots per game last season. The Spokesman-Review calls him Gonzaga’s first real rim protector since Chet Holmgren. Purdue already lives on the three, taking 98 of them across its exhibitions and making just 32.7%. If Diop walls off the rim, the Boilers are left firing over the top, and that hasn’t worked yet.
This is also a Gonzaga team that simply doesn’t play in shootouts lately. The Under has cashed in 17 of the Zags’ last 20 games, and Few’s defense gave up only 66.2 points a night last season. The number itself has been sliding. The total opened at 156.5 and has been bet down to 154.5, even with most of the public picks on the Over.
Where this blows up on me
Gonzaga wants to run, and Painter said so himself: “These guys are really good in transition.” If Purdue’s young guards cough it up, those live-ball turnovers turn into dunks and this thing goes over fast. The projection models aren’t on my side either. KenPom has it 78-77, Bart Torvik has 79-74, and EvanMiya is up around 82-76, which puts them right around this number. Those ratings still lean heavily on preseason priors and last year’s rosters, and I trust the exhibition tape more than the math for one night. Still, if Davis Fogle gets hot (he hit 6 of 7 threes and scored 30 in 20 minutes at Kraziness in the Kennel), all bets are off.
Purdue has also never lost to Gonzaga, going 5-0 in the series, and Pierce went to high school with Huff and played alongside Xaivian Lee at Princeton, so expect a few hugs at center court. That’s good drama, but none of it adds points to the scoreboard.
How I see it playing out
Lots of first-game rust. Possessions that drag into the shot clock. Two frontcourts with real size meeting at the rim. Gonzaga’s size probably wins it late, but neither team has the shooters to keep pace with a mid-150s total yet.
Projected score: Gonzaga 77, Purdue 71
The Pick: Under 154.5 (-112)
