The Pistons are 2.5-point favorites at most books with the total at 217.5 (218.5 in a few spots), and my play is Under 217.5.

The two best records in the East meet in Detroit, and the scoreboard operator might get the night off. Philadelphia is 7-1, Detroit is 6-1, and these two own the two stingiest defenses in the league. Detroit gives up 102.4 points per 100 possessions, Philly 105.4. Everybody wants to talk about the stars. I want to talk about how hard it’s going to be for those stars to breathe.

Detroit has turned defense into a personality

The Pistons have held four straight opponents under 95 points. On Monday they led Charlotte by just four midway through the third quarter, then cranked up the pressure and won 124-91. J.B. Bickerstaff didn’t hide what this team is about: “Our guys have completely bought into what is most important to the team, and for us, it’s our identity of being defensive-minded.”

That identity has teeth. Detroit forces a turnover on 16.3% of opponent trips, the third-highest rate in the league, and Cade Cunningham is leading the charge from the front. He had 33 points and five steals in 27 minutes Monday. When your best player is also your most annoying defender, empty possessions pile up fast.

Philly’s star lineup is crowded, not fast

The Sixers have the names. Tyrese Maxey is scoring 29.1 a night, Jaylen Brown dropped 25 on Chicago, and LeBron James leads the team in assists. Yet Philadelphia scores 111.2 points per 100 possessions, about two points below the league average. Part of that is a team that almost never gets a second shot. Only one team grabs a smaller share of its own misses.

Joel Embiid is also playing through right foot plantar fasciitis on a minutes restriction, and he’s still finding his place in a lineup where he isn’t the focal point. “I’m such a rhythm guy,” he said after logging 25 minutes Monday. A rhythm guy with a sore foot, against the league’s best defense, isn’t a recipe for a track meet.

We’ve already seen the rough draft

These teams met on October 25 in Philadelphia, and Detroit won 106-93. That’s 199 total points, a full 18.5 under tonight’s number. Yes, Embiid and VJ Edgecombe sat out that night, which is why I’m not expecting a repeat of 199. But the Pistons will be missing something too. Center Jalen Duren is out with a hamstring strain, which takes a big body out of the middle and some of Detroit’s putback chances with him.

Pace seals it for me. Detroit plays slower than the league average, and when I run both offenses against both defenses at a tempo in between, I land around 214. That’s a few points of cushion on a night when both coaches will be treating this like a statement game.

Why I could be wrong

Detroit is hitting 38.1% from three, and a hot shooting night from the Pistons can wreck any under. The Sixers just hung 126 on Chicago, and Cunningham has the kind of explosive scoring quarters that bend totals by himself. If this one goes down to the wire, late fouling could add a handful of cheap points at the end. Those are real worries, but I’ll trust two elite defenses over two hot streaks.

Projected score: Pistons 108, 76ers 104
