Miami Heat at LA Clippers

The Heat are 5.5-point road favorites over the Clippers with the total at 234.5, and my play is Clippers +5.5.
“We’re not playing hard enough,” Giannis Antetokounmpo said after Monday’s 138-117 loss to the Lakers. “We’ve got to play harder. We’ve got to have some pride.” When a team’s best player says that out loud, I’m not rushing to lay points with them on the road two nights later.
This is a market that’s betting on names. The Heat have Giannis, Bam Adebayo and a reputation for defense. The Clippers have a 1-6 record and a six-game losing streak. Look under the hood, and these teams are a lot closer than 5.5 points.
Miami’s defense is the problem, not the solution
The Heat (2-5) were supposed to be a defensive juggernaut after adding Giannis. Instead, they rank 27th with a defensive rating of 119.8, per the Miami Herald, and opponents are shooting 41% from three against them, the second-highest mark in the league. The Lakers shot 57% and made 19 threes Monday. Erik Spoelstra didn’t sugarcoat it: “It’s not good enough. Our locker room knows it’s not good enough.”
The Clippers have quietly been decent behind the arc, shooting 38.4% from three (fifth in the NBA, per Basketball Reference). That’s the exact weakness Miami hasn’t fixed. Kobe Sanders just put up a career-high 26 against Toronto, and the Clippers also get reinforcements: Rui Hachimura and Derrick Jones Jr. both missed Monday but are not on the league’s injury report for tonight.

The Clippers’ record looks worse than their play. Their losses have come against Oklahoma City, the Lakers twice, Minnesota, Golden State and Toronto, and Basketball Reference rates their schedule as the fourth-toughest in the league so far. Adjust for opponent, and the Clippers’ Simple Rating System score (point differential adjusted for schedule) is -0.8, compared with Miami’s -4.9. On those numbers, L.A. should be the favorite at home, not getting more than five points. Against Toronto, they led by as many as 16 before falling apart late. “I love our fight. Forty-two minutes of good basketball and six minutes we have to work on,” Tyronn Lue said afterward.
The case against me
Those six minutes are the issue. The Clippers turn the ball over 20.1 times a game, the most in the league, and Darius Garland leads the NBA with 38 turnovers through seven games. If Miami’s hands get active and turn those giveaways into easy run-outs, Giannis (28.4 points, 12.3 rebounds) can bulldoze a Clippers team still missing Bradley Beal and Brandon Ingram. Giannis is probable with a right wrist sprain, so he should play. Bigger picture: one good night of defense from a team with this much talent is always a possibility.
Still, I’m taking the points with the home team. The Heat play at Golden State on Thursday, and the Clippers should have two rotation players back. Some books are hanging 4.5, so grab the 5.5 if you can find it.
Projected score: Clippers 116, Heat 114.
The Pick: Clippers +5.5
