Arizona Wildcats at BYU Cougars

BYU is a 7.5-point home favorite over Arizona with a total that has dropped from 51.5 all the way down to 47.5. My play is Arizona getting the points.
Last year’s meeting between these two teams was decided in double overtime at this exact stadium. BYU won 33-27, but that game required two extra periods to settle. Regulation ended tied. That’s the kind of result that tells you these teams match up closer than the current 7.5-point spread suggests. When two programs go to double overtime in the same venue and the market comes back a year later asking one to win by 8+, there’s usually a disconnect between the number and the reality.
Noah Fifita is the reason Arizona keeps games close. He’s a returning starter with legitimate NFL potential — 3,033 career passing yards and 15 touchdowns coming into this game. Fifita has the accuracy and pocket presence to move the ball against a BYU defense that lost multiple pieces from last year. He also has the mobility to escape pressure when the pass rush gets home. That’s a specific weapon that limits how much BYU can pin its ears back and blitz.
Arizona’s road performance is worth noting. They’re 3-0 against the spread in their last three road games. Brent Brennan’s team travels well and doesn’t get intimidated by hostile environments. LaVell Edwards Stadium is loud and altitude-affected, but Fifita and the Arizona offense have been through worse this season and last year they took BYU to double overtime in Provo.
The 4-point drop on the total from 51.5 to 47.5 is worth acknowledging. Sharp money moved the number down significantly, which usually reflects a specific read on how these two teams match up defensively. Both offenses looked good against FCS opponents in Week 1 (Arizona 35, Northern Arizona 7; BYU 63, Utah Tech 7), but neither will face that level of defense on Saturday. The total move suggests professional bettors expect a closer, lower-scoring game than the market initially priced.
That works to Arizona’s advantage on the side. A close, low-scoring game keeps things inside 7.5 points regardless of who wins. If BYU wins 24-17, that’s a 7-point margin — right on the number, which pushes for +7.5. If BYU wins 21-14, that covers +7.5. Only a BYU win by 8+ points loses the ticket.
BYU has real advantages here. They’re 21-1 straight up as favorites in their last 22 games. They’re 8-0 at home in their last 8. They’re the ranked team and they’re at home. But those trends have been built partly on strength of schedule and matchups where the talent gap was clearer. Against Arizona, with Fifita at quarterback and a defense that showed up in Week 1, the talent gap is much narrower.
Realistic scores in this game: BYU 27, Arizona 21 (covers +7.5); BYU 24, Arizona 17 (pushes +7); BYU 30, Arizona 24 (covers +7.5); or a straight-up Arizona upset. All three cover the spread. Even a BYU win by 8-10 points would require them to score significantly above their per-game average against Arizona’s defense — something that hasn’t happened since the 2024 meeting when the Wildcats had a completely different roster.
The Pick: Arizona Wildcats +7.5
