East Carolina Pirates at UAB Blazers

East Carolina is a 4.5-point road favorite over UAB with a total of 49.5. My play is the Under.
Neither offense scores much. East Carolina averages 24.8 points per game, 94th nationally, and UAB averages 22.2, 108th. UAB’s passing game ranks 129th in the country at 155.8 yards per game, and Ryder Burton has thrown more interceptions (five) than touchdowns (four) while completing 55.4% of his passes. He went 10-of-20 for 131 yards with an interception in last week’s 38-13 loss to Memphis. A UAB offense that can’t throw has a hard time keeping pace in a shootout.
East Carolina stalls out too. The Pirates convert just 27% of their third downs, which ranks 132nd in the FBS. They also average 70.6 penalty yards per game, 116th nationally, and drive-killing flags turn scoring chances into punts. East Carolina beat Rice 28-12 last week, but Emory Williams threw for just 143 yards. This offense leans on TJ Engleman Jr. and the run game, and that keeps the clock moving.
The defenses match up well with the offenses. UAB ranks second in the nation against the pass, allowing 126 yards per game, and East Carolina’s passing attack ranks 99th. East Carolina’s defense is solid too, allowing 22.6 points per game and ranking 25th against the pass. Both teams played Saturday, so this is a short week for both staffs, and that usually means simpler game plans with fewer explosive plays.
The risk is the red zone and UAB’s run defense. UAB has allowed points on every red-zone trip this season, and East Carolina gives up points on 94% of its opponents’ trips. UAB also ranks 123rd against the run, and Engleman ran for 136 yards against Rice. If East Carolina turns its trips into touchdowns instead of field goals, the Pirates alone could get into the 30s. But both offenses struggle to get into the red zone in the first place, and a 24-17 type of game is the most likely outcome. That stays under 49.5.
