Iowa is a 14.5-point home favorite over Iowa State in the 73rd Cy-Hawk Trophy game with a total of 41.5. My play is the Under.
The head-to-head Under trend is the entry point here. The Under has hit in 6 of the last 7 meetings between these two teams. That’s a specific rivalry pattern that shows up regardless of who’s coaching, who’s at quarterback, or what the offensive rankings say heading in. When two programs meet with any regularity and produce Unders consistently, there’s a stylistic reason. And in the Cy-Hawk case, both programs play grinding, defensive, ball-control football in the biggest rivalry game on their schedule.
Kirk Ferentz has coached Iowa the same way for 27 years — physical defense, ground game, minimize turnovers, and win with field position. That approach produces low-scoring games by design. Iowa scored 40 points against Northern Illinois in Week 1, but they did it by controlling clock with 289 rushing yards and shutting down the opposing offense completely (zero points allowed, 120 total yards allowed). That’s an identity that suppresses total point production even in wins. Against Iowa State’s own solid defense, this game won’t turn into a shootout.
Now consider Iowa State’s specific offensive situation. Matt Campbell, the winningest coach in Iowa State history, took the Penn State job in the offseason. He didn’t just leave with a suitcase — he took the vast majority of the Cyclones’ best players with him. Iowa State returns 45% of its production, ranking outside the top 100 nationally in returning production. Their transfer portal class ranked 67th nationally. Jimmy Rogers, the new head coach, is working with a roster that lacks continuity and high-end talent to fill the holes.
That’s a first-year head coach with a young quarterback and a group of new pieces heading into a hostile night environment at Kinnick Stadium. Iowa State’s offense is going to have real trouble sustaining drives against Iowa’s defensive front, which just recorded 6 sacks in Week 1 and looks like it’s playing at a high level. The Cyclones might score 10-14 points. That’s not the profile of an offense that can push over a 41.5 total.
The math on 41.5 requires both teams to score at competent levels — Iowa in the mid-20s and Iowa State in the mid-teens or better. Given how conservatively Ferentz will call this game (Iowa doesn’t need to score 30 to win by 14) and how limited Iowa State’s offense is likely to be, that math is hard to hit.
Realistic outcomes: Iowa 24, Iowa State 10 (34 total); Iowa 27, Iowa State 13 (40 total); Iowa 21, Iowa State 10 (31 total). All comfortably Under 41.5. For the Over to hit, we need Iowa to score 28+ and Iowa State to score 14+, which is possible but requires Ferentz to be aggressive in a game where he doesn’t need to be. Ferentz isn’t aggressive in this spot. He grinds out the win with the run game and controls the clock.
