Kent State at Sacramento State
Friday, October 30, 2026
10:30 PM ET, Hornet Stadium, Sacramento, CA
Kent State is a 10-point road favorite with the total sitting at 46.5. My play is Under 46.5 (-110).
Here is a number that should stop you cold: Kent State has scored 12 points. Not per game. Total, across four road trips this season. Now the Golden Flashes fly across the country for a 7:30 PM local kickoff (10:30 PM back home in Ohio) against a Sacramento State team that has scored 10 points a game against everybody not named Mississippi Valley State. This late-night ESPN2 slot has Over written all over it for the casual crowd. I’m going the other way.
Two offenses that live in the basement
Kent State averages 14.9 points a game, 137th in the country. Sacramento State averages 15.2, which ranks 134th out of 138 FBS teams. That’s not a coincidence of tough schedules, either. Strip out the garbage time and look at success rate, which simply asks how often a play actually keeps an offense on schedule, and Kent State checks in around 35%, bottom six in the country, while Sac State sits under 40%, bottom 20. Both offenses spend most nights behind the chains.
Kent State’s road resume is ugly: 0-57 at South Carolina, 3-59 at Ohio State, 7-38 at Western Michigan, and 2-29 at South Florida. Sure, those are tougher defenses than the one waiting in Sacramento. But the problems travel: when drives stall this team can’t bail itself out. The Flashes are 3-of-9 on field goals this season and are punching it in on just 54% of their red-zone trips. Those are points left in the parking lot.
Sacramento State, in its first year of FBS football under first-year coach Alonzo Carter (yes, the same guy who used to choreograph for MC Hammer), has been held to 17 points or fewer in all seven games against FBS and FCS-power opposition. Ohio and Ball State are common opponents here. Kent State beat Ball State 26-13 and lost to Ohio 13-10. Neither game sniffed 46.5.

The Dark Side gets a banged-up Hornets front
The best unit on the field belongs to Kent State’s “Dark Side Defense.” The Flashes have 19 sacks and rank third in the MAC in both sacks and interceptions. Hayden Dawahare (four sacks) and Jaihien Roy (four sacks) each got home twice against Akron last week.
That’s a problem for a Sacramento State line that listed five offensive linemen out on last week’s MAC availability report. The Hornets are also still waiting on quarterback Carson Conklin, who hurt his wrist in the opener and hasn’t played since. Jackson Sharman has been steady enough (1,257 yards, 8 TDs, 6 INTs) but a strip-sack fumble right before halftime helped Ball State pull away from the Hornets last week. Expect Kent State to bring heat and dare Sharman to string together 10-play drives.
There’s a little extra spice on the Kent sideline, too. Assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Cherokee Valeria spent 2019 through 2024 on staff at Sac State. He knows the building, and he knows a lot of what these Hornets want to do.
Why the clock is the Under’s best friend
Neither team plays fast. Both offenses take more than 30 seconds between snaps in neutral situations, slower than the FBS average, and Kent State holds the ball for 30:45 a game. The Flashes are also allergic to fast starts, scoring just 6.3 first-half points a game. A slow first half, with the Hornets playing their second of three games in 12 days, is exactly the script Under bettors want.
The Over crowd will point to last week, when Dru DeShields accounted for five touchdowns against Akron and Wayne Harris went for 9 catches, 156 yards, and three scores. One big day doesn’t erase eight weeks of tape. Kent State has cleared 26 points just twice in eight games, and Sac State has gone Under in five of its eight games.
The case against me
Sac State’s defense is a sieve. It allows 32.9 points a game, and opponents score on 86% of their red-zone trips. If Kent’s passing game carries its Akron form west, 30-plus is on the table by itself. The Hornets also rank 134th nationally in turnover margin, and short fields are how unders die. Kent’s own defense allows a successful play on roughly 45% of snaps, bottom 25 nationally, so a Conklin return could give Sac State a real spark. And the Flashes have the kind of defense and return game (Da’Realyst Clark led the nation in kick-return touchdowns last year) that can score without the offense. One pick-six changes the math.
Projected score
Kent State grinds out a two-score win on the road, and the late-night crowd in Sacramento sees a lot more punts than fireworks until the postgame show. Kent State 26, Sacramento State 14.
