The only ranked-vs-ranked game of Week 1 is Sunday night in Nashville. No. 9 Ole Miss faces No. 24 Louisville at Nissan Stadium as 6.5-point favorites with a total of 55.5. The value here is on Louisville getting the points at a neutral site.

Neutral site matters. This game is in Nashville, which isn’t home for either program. Ole Miss doesn’t get its usual Vaught-Hemingway Stadium crowd. Louisville doesn’t have to travel to a hostile SEC environment. That levels the playing field in a way that most matchups between top-25 programs don’t experience. When you strip away home field advantage, the talent gap between these two teams narrows significantly.

Ole Miss is coming off a 13-2 season, but the way they got to that record is worth examining. They went just 5-4 as favorites of 6.5 points or more last year. In other words, half the time Ole Miss was in this exact profile last season, they didn’t cover the number. That’s the pattern of a team that’s talented but not so dominant that they consistently blow out slightly-inferior opponents. Louisville isn’t a bad team here — they went 9-4 with a competent offense and defense — so the notion that Ole Miss dominates them by more than a touchdown isn’t supported by how Ole Miss actually played last year.

There’s also the Pete Golding factor. He took over as Ole Miss head coach after Lane Kiffin left for LSU during the offseason. He did coach the Rebels in their CFP appearance last year, but this is his first full season running the program from installation through game day. First-year head coaches in the season opener typically have execution issues, and Golding’s Ole Miss defense — which allowed 22.6 points per game last year — hasn’t proven yet that it can consistently shut down Power 4 offenses.

Trinidad Chambliss returns at quarterback for Ole Miss. He led the SEC in passing yards last year and finished eighth in the Heisman voting. That’s legitimate elite production. But he’s also breaking in a new head coach’s system for the first time as the full-time starter, and Louisville’s defense returns most of its key pieces from a group that gave up just 21.1 points per game last year — better than Ole Miss’s defensive number.

Jeff Brohm has quietly built Louisville into a program that plays tough football against top opponents. He went 9-4 last year against a schedule that included several ranked teams, and his offensive scheme is designed to move the ball in multiple ways. Louisville’s own offense averaged 29.9 points per game last year — enough to stay competitive against any defense that isn’t elite. Ole Miss’s isn’t elite. It’s average-to-good.

The 6.5 point spread would require Ole Miss to win by 7 or more. A one-touchdown Ole Miss win doesn’t cover. A field goal Ole Miss win doesn’t cover. Given how close the two teams’ defensive numbers were last year, and given that Ole Miss covers 6.5+ point spreads just 56% of the time, the more likely outcome is Ole Miss winning 27-24 or 31-24 — both of which cover the Louisville side.

I looked at the total. It moved up from 53.5 to 55.5, which suggests some Over money. Both teams have offensive capability, and a 31-24 or 34-27 game gets right up around the total. There’s a case for the Over. But the side offers cleaner value on the number.

The Pick: Louisville Cardinals +6.5
