Oklahoma is a 5.5-point road favorite at Michigan Stadium Saturday afternoon in the Big Noon Kickoff. Total is 43.5. My play is the Sooners.
Michigan barely survived Week 1. They beat Western Michigan 13-12 on a Hail Mary from Bryce Underwood to JJ Buchanan on the final play. Take away that lucky throw and the Wolverines lose their season opener at home to a MAC opponent. Look at the box score — 276 total yards, 106 rushing yards, 3-for-10 on third down, 9 penalties, lost the turnover battle 3-0. Western Michigan controlled the ball for over 40 minutes. That’s the actual game Michigan played. The Hail Mary just papered over how bad it looked.
There’s a specific reason for the ugly performance. Kyle Whittingham is the new head coach. Jason Beck is the new offensive coordinator. Jay Hill is the new defensive coordinator. Michigan brought in an entirely new coaching staff, and Week 1 was the first test of the installation. It didn’t work. Whittingham himself said afterward the team has “a lot to fix.” That’s a coach staring at 4 days of practice before hosting a top-10 opponent in Big Noon Kickoff. That’s not enough time to fix an offense that couldn’t move the ball against MAC talent, let alone against Oklahoma’s front seven.
The Sooners came out of Week 1 looking like a different tier of team. They shut out UTEP 51-0 and covered a 40.5-point spread. John Mateer was efficient, the defense didn’t allow a single point, and the whole roster looked ready for the SEC schedule ahead. Brent Venables’ team came in with real playoff aspirations and their Week 1 execution suggested those aspirations are legitimate.
The head-to-head history helps too. Oklahoma beat Michigan 24-13 in Norman last year in this exact matchup. Mateer had 19 rushing attempts and controlled the game. Now the venue flips to Ann Arbor, which typically favors Michigan by about 3 points. Adjust that 24-13 margin (11 points) for the road environment and Oklahoma is still a 7-8 point favorite based purely on how these teams played last year. Michigan’s Week 1 struggles suggest they’ve gotten worse relative to Oklahoma, not better.
The 5.5-point spread is actually generous to Michigan given all this. The Wolverines are still trying to figure out their offensive identity under a new coordinator, they don’t have their rushing attack sorted out, and their quarterback play is under scrutiny. Oklahoma’s defense just held a Conference USA team without a point. That same defense against a Michigan offense that couldn’t crack MAC-level Western Michigan should produce a comfortable Sooners win.
Big Noon Kickoff at Michigan Stadium is a real environment. Whittingham will have his team amped up. But amped up isn’t the same as prepared, and Oklahoma has the experience, the returning coordinator, and the game plan to exploit Michigan’s Week 1 issues.
