Pittsburgh at Miami

Miami is a 20.5-point home favorite over Pittsburgh with a total of 50.5. My play is Under 50.5.

Pat Narduzzi was asked Monday who starts at quarterback against the No. 1 team in the country. His answer: “I don’t know.” That’s the whole story of this game. And there’s one more character in the cast that nobody is talking about: the wind.

Pitt lost its quarterback and its offense went with him

Mason Heintschel was the engine. He threw for 1,304 yards and 14 touchdowns with one interception before a season-ending injury, and Pitt has lost both games since. Holden Geriner started against North Carolina and went 27-of-44 for 219 yards, no touchdowns and two picks. True freshman Corey Dailey got the nod at Boston College, hit Blue Hicks for a 75-yard score on his first snap, then completed just 10 of his next 24 with two interceptions.

“There’s no question, it’s a lot easier when you say that guy’s our guy,” Narduzzi said. He doesn’t have that guy. Pitt’s offense was producing at a decent clip on a per-play basis for the season, and over the last three games it has gone into the red. Now it travels 1,000 miles to face a Miami defense that ranks second in the country at stopping the run and first in keeping opponents behind the chains on the ground. The Canes are also second nationally in red-zone defense. Pitt is going to have to throw to score, with a backup, into the teeth of that.

Miami’s offense isn’t the juggernaut it was in September

Yes, Miami hung 77 on Florida A&M and 52 on Central Michigan. Those numbers are padding the 5-1 over record. Lately, though, the machine has been coughing. The Canes needed double overtime to get past Florida State, and the local beat writers walked away worried that the passing game was out of rhythm behind some shaky pass protection. Over the last three games, Miami’s per-play efficiency has fallen off by more than a third from its season level.

Darian Mensah is still very good (1,764 yards, 18 touchdowns, one interception), and Malachi Toney is a problem for anybody. But this is not a matchup where Miami can just lean on the run and coast. Pitt leads the ACC in run defense, allowing 57.3 yards a game and 2.0 a carry, and it ranks top five in the nation at stopping the run by efficiency. Freshman Javian Mallory is a stud, but this front makes everybody look mortal. Pitt also leads the league with nine interceptions. Its weak spot is pass defense, and that’s exactly where Miami has been least comfortable lately.

Wind, rain and a 20-point spread

The early forecast for Miami Gardens calls for winds around 20 mph with a chance of rain. That matters. One projection model knocks six full points off the total for the wind alone and lands at 48. The market is already leaning our way, too: this total has dropped since it opened.

Here’s the logic. A big favorite with a sputtering passing game, playing in the wind, against a defense that can’t be run on, tends to get its lead and then turn the game into a clock-killing exercise. Miami doesn’t need style points. Pitt, meanwhile, might not find the end zone more than once. Miami has been one of the best teams in the country at keeping opponents out of the end zone once they get close.

How this ticket gets torched

Miami is 5-1 to the over for a reason, and turnovers are the scariest part of the under. If Pitt’s young quarterback throws a pick or two in his own end, Miami gets short fields and touchdowns come cheap. Geriner and Dailey have thrown four interceptions between them in two starts. Pitt also gave up 38 points to Miami last year. And if the wind dies down by Saturday, a chunk of my edge goes with it. I’d play this to 49.5 and stop chasing below 48.5.

Projected score: Miami 31, Pittsburgh 10. Miami wins comfortably, and the forty-something total takes care of the rest.
