Utah at Cincinnati
Saturday, October 31, 2026

Utah is a 6.5-point favorite at Cincinnati with the total at 56.5, and my play is Utah -6.5 (-115).

One Saturday changed this number by three points. This line opened Utah -9.5, then Cincinnati punched No. 8 Texas Tech in the mouth at homecoming, 37-24, and the money came running toward the Bearcats. I get it. That was a terrific win. But one great afternoon doesn’t rewrite seven weeks of film, and the film says Cincinnati still can’t stop the run.

Selling the Texas Tech hangover

Give Cincinnati its flowers first. The Bearcats led 24-6 at the half, sacked Texas Tech four times, forced three turnovers and held the Red Raiders to 3-of-15 on third down. JC French IV threw four touchdowns. Cole Tabb ran for 173 yards. It was their first home win over a top-10 team since 2006.

Now zoom out. This is the same team that lost 34-7 at Arizona and gave up 45 at West Virginia. Across the full season, Cincinnati’s defense loses the down-to-down battle about as often as anyone in the country. Opponents stay on schedule against it 47.5% of the time, which ranks 112th. On running plays it’s worse, at 118th. One sharp game plan against a pass-first Texas Tech team doesn’t fix that.

Utah is going to run right at the soft spot

This is the matchup that decides the game. Utah’s offense moves the ball on the ground efficiently, ranking 17th in value gained per rush, and Cincinnati’s run defense sits 103rd by the same measure. Then there are the money downs: Utah is one of the best teams in the country at moving the chains on third and fourth down, and Cincinnati is one of the worst at getting off the field on them. That’s a recipe for long drives that end in touchdowns, not field goals.

Devon Dampier is the engine. He ran for 150 yards and two scores against Houston when the Cougars tried to force him to keep the ball, and Morgan Scalley summed up their plan bluntly: “They were basically saying, we want him to pull it, we want him to pitch it.” Dampier keeps it, Wayshawn Parker gets the pitch, and either way the Utes gain yards. Utah ran for 226 yards that night, and Houston knew exactly what was coming.

Tabb meets a wall

Cincinnati’s offense is good, and I won’t pretend otherwise. The Bearcats have scored 30 or more in six of seven games, and Tabb is averaging 9.6 yards a carry with 12 total touchdowns. But the Bearcats gain big chunks on the ground without staying on schedule there. Their rushing success rate is only 80th. They live on the home run.

Utah takes the home run away. The Utes rank 11th in value allowed per rush and 12th in overall success rate allowed, and they just held Houston to 86 rushing yards and 13 points. If Cincinnati can’t get Tabb loose, this becomes French trying to keep pace through the air against a defense that rarely lets anyone stay on schedule. He’s been terrific, with only two interceptions all year. Asking him to win a shootout alone is a lot.

The power ratings back this up. SP+ has Utah 10th and Cincinnati 49th, a gap that works out to roughly a 9-point Utah edge on this field. The opener was right. The current number is the overreaction.

The case against me

The spot isn’t perfect. Utah is coming off an emotional comeback against Houston, BYU is next on the schedule, and Scalley spent part of this week talking about the letdown risk himself. The Utes are also without starting left guard Kelvin Obot, and the protection had first-half mistakes against Houston. Cincinnati’s pass rush just sacked Texas Tech four times in this building, and the Bearcats are 168-8 all-time when they hit 30 at Nippert. If French gets hot early and the crowd gets loud, the hook at 6.5 could feel thin.

Utah has also covered six of seven, so the market knows these guys are good. I still think it’s underrating how badly this matchup fits them.

Projected score: The Utes grind out long scoring drives, Cincinnati gets a couple of big plays, and the gap opens up in the fourth quarter. Utah 34, Cincinnati 23.
