Wisconsin at Iowa

12:00 PM ET, Kinnick Stadium
Iowa is a 3.5-point favorite with the total sitting at 36.5. My play is Wisconsin +3.5 (-115).
The 100th meeting for the Heartland Trophy has a total lower than some quarterback ratings, and that tells you everything. When the market expects about five touchdowns combined, every half-point is gold, and getting more than a field goal with the best defense on the field is the kind of gift I don’t send back.
Iowa owns this rivalry lately, and Wisconsin knows it
Let’s not pretend the history isn’t ugly. Iowa has won four straight in this series, including a 37-0 beatdown in Madison last October, and the last two meetings were a combined 79-10. Wisconsin hasn’t won in Iowa City since 2018. “Rivalries are what college football are about,” Badgers receiver Chris Brooks said this week. “This is one that personally, I haven’t won.”
But this isn’t last year’s 4-8 Wisconsin. Luke Fickell’s group is 5-2, ranked for the first time since 2023, and coming off a 24-7 win over USC that was pure violence. The Trojans finished with -18 rushing yards. Minus eighteen. Wisconsin sacked them five times and picked off two passes. Fickell’s summary: “Gritty ain’t pretty.” Fair enough, but gritty travels.
The best defense in this game wears red
Both of these teams can play defense, so the question is which one does it best. Wisconsin is allowing 15.3 points per game and just 2.8 yards per carry, and by one measure it gives up fewer yards per play than anyone in the country. Edge rusher Sebastian Cheeks leads the Big Ten with 34 pressures, and the Badgers have blocked five kicks, the most in the nation. In a game this tight, a blocked punt is basically a touchdown.
The play-by-play numbers agree. Measured by points added per snap after adjusting for opponents, Wisconsin’s margin ranks 14th nationally. Iowa’s ranks 35th. That’s a real gap, and a 3.5-point spread on the road isn’t pricing it.

Iowa’s offense just lost its best weapon
Here’s where Iowa gets hard to back. Running back Kamari Moulton is out for the season. He was the team’s best runner, with 541 yards at 6.3 yards a carry, and now the Hawkeyes turn to Braeden Jackson and Nathan McNeil while L.J. Phillips Jr. is day-to-day. Running against a defense that just held USC below zero is not a fun first assignment.
The quarterback picture doesn’t help. Kirk Ferentz says he plans to start Brown, then added that he’ll “play it by ear,” which is not exactly a ringing endorsement. Brown has been roughly a break-even passer on a per-play basis. Last week at Minnesota, Iowa lost 13-10 as a 7.5-point favorite after four turnovers and a blocked punt, and returner Evan James has muffed punts in two straight games. Against a defense with seven interceptions in its last five games, sloppy is fatal.
Why I could be wrong
Wisconsin’s offense is bad, plain and simple. The Badgers rank 118th in total offense and 119th in passing, and Colton Joseph went 12 of 14 for 58 yards against USC. That isn’t a passing game, it’s a handoff with extra steps. Joseph is also Wisconsin’s best runner, and he’s put the ball on the turf five times. Iowa’s run defense ranks fifth nationally at 82.9 yards per game, so long Badger drives won’t come easily. An 11 a.m. local kick at Kinnick with a chance of rain is a tough place to come from behind. And this Iowa program has spent four years making Wisconsin look silly.
The bottom line
The market already moved a point toward Wisconsin, and I still think it’s short. This one gets settled by a turnover or a special-teams swing, and Wisconsin has the better turnover margin plus the nation’s best kick-blocking unit, while Iowa has been coughing it up. Give me the points. A Badger win outright wouldn’t shock me.
Projected score: Iowa 16, Wisconsin 14
The Pick: Wisconsin +3.5
