It is easy to overlook some of the lesser events that occupy the weeks before or after a Major, especially one that ends on a Monday, but dont overlook this weeks RBC Canadian Open. Yes, many of the Tours elite are taking a much needed break after a lot of travel the last two weeks but there are only five regular season events left before the FedExCup Playoffs begin and it is officially crunch time for those looking to extend their season past into September. There are also money list exemptions to chase as well as berths in future events, so there really are no throw-away events on the PGA schedule.
Bubba Watson, Jim Furyk and Jason Day highlight a field that will tackle Glen Abbey GC and there are 27 players that make the trip from Scotland. This is the third oldest world championship behind the British and US Opens and there was a time that this event was regarded as the fifth Major. Many of the games greats have won this championship and Tiger Woods pulled the only Triple Crown in history when he won the British, US and Canadian Opens in the 2000 season. A notable player not making the trip is 2013 champ Brandt Snedeker. Sneds is resting his aching hip and that leaves the Glen Abbey title undefended as last years champ, Tim Clark, won at Royal Montreal. Mike Weir, likely the most recognizable Canadian golfer, will also be missing this years event as he is taking a break from competitive golf to focus on personal and family needs. Weir would have been making his 25th appearance in his countrys championship.
Glen Abbey has hosted the Canadian Open more than any other course north of the border and this year will be the 27thtime that the 7,273 yard, par-72 Nicklaus design has seen PGA action. This course held this event exclusively from 1981-1996 before a rotation was put back in use and the last three Canadian Opens have been shootouts with the winning total at 16-under or better. Nathan Green and Chez Reavie won here before Snedeker in 2013 so there is a lot of hope for the lesser-known players to make their mark. With a wide open field and plenty of motivation, it is easy to see why this event is often a hotly contested on come Sunday afternoon.
Each week, we take a look at the online betting sites and highlight the players that we think are the best bets to win. You are happy if you followed the picks for the British as we correctly identified Zach Johnson as a great longshot option and he paid something in the neighborhood of 80/1 depending on which online sportsbook you favor. That just might very well be the biggest one-time hit we have called, lets see if we can get two in a row. Here are our picks to win the 2015 RBC Canadian Open.
Brooks Koepka (22 to 1 odds to win) Bet your picks at Bovada Sportsbook, home of the 50% bonus!
You will see a lot of sportsbook love for Bubba, Furyk and Jason Day but that makes t Koepka all the more valuable as a winning pick. Brooks broke through earlier this season with a win at the Waste Management and has only missed one cut all year. He has five top-10s and hasnt been worse than 18thin any of his last three starts, including both Opens. He has risen to 18thin the FedEx standings and 23rdin the world rank so he is probably a bit undervalued in this field. I never really advocate anything more than a one-unit bet on any player to win but this could be the exception as this week does have that throw one at the dartboard feel. Koepka is 9thin driving distance and 9thin both strokes gained and total putting. He leads the Tour in eagles and has improved his scoring average to 5thso look for him to be a factor all week.
Graeme McDowell (40 to 1)
I will be honest, Im not sure if this is a great bet or a terrible one but I do love seeing these kind of odds attached to a talented player. Now, there is a reason that McDowell isnt more of a favorite and it is directly due to mostly spotty play this year but Id rather bet on a proven winner bouncing back than trying to sort through the pages of never-has-beens to make that lottery ticket play. Even with the underwhelming stats he has put up so far, Graeme is still top-35 in fairways and is one of the better situational putters on Tour. He putts well in the mid-range and leads the Tour in putting over 25 feet so he has the ability to score if he can just clean up the approach game a bit. He has been around the block and is used to traveling a lot and still performing as a seasoned international player. He could totally bust this week but I think a weak field spells more chance for a turnaround.
Retief Goosen (70 to 1)
Goosen was a major factor in the fantasy golf world last week as he turned back the clock a bit and notched a top-20 British Open finish. He has more yesterdays than tomorrows as far as his regular PGA Tour career is concerned but he still averages nearly 300 yards per drive and has a knack for saving pars with a solid scrambling game. Guys like Goosen, Vijay Singh and Kenny Perry might be making their last few go-rounds in some of these events but it wasnt so long ago that Goose was at the top of the game that he cant find it again for just one week. Again, it is tough to find a lot of good stats to attach to the longshots this week so look for the better track records and hope for another turn-back-the-clock performance.
The Monday finish at The British Open has kept the online betting sites from posting head-to-head matchups as of press time. Check back next week for head-to-head previews. Find the lowest priced betting odds for this and ALL sports betting events at 5Dimes Sportsbook.
Good luck and good golf!
