Kentucky Derby Entries, Odds, Jockeys and Post Positions

The 2010 Kentucky Derby entries were drawn on Wednesday and rain was predicted for Derby Day Saturday, May 1. With the maximum 20 horses entered and dominant pre-Derby favorite Eskendereya out, we could be in for a longshot fest!

The 136th Kentucky Derby goes as the eleventh race at Churchill Downs on the traditional first Saturday in May, and has a scheduled post time of 6:24 p.m. Thats nice, but were more concerned with the possibility of cashing a big ticket in a race with a high probability of a pace meltdown and favorites that are only slightly better than their competition. The favorites also drew the worst possible post positions.

Lookin At Lucky, the 3-1 morning line favorite, drew post one and will need a perfect trip under jockey Garret Gomez in the bulky 20-horse field. The rallying-type didnt fare well from the rail in the Santa Anita Derby and this field will make it even tougher for him but he is the best horse in the 2010 Derby field. Wire-to-wire Santa Anita Derby winner Sidneys Candy, the second-choice on the morning line for this years Derby at 5-1, drew the worst possible post 20 for his up-front running style. Were not ready to say he absolutely needs the lead to win, but hes won that way more often than not, and in a race loaded with early speed hes not likely to see the early lead without seriously compromising his chances late.

Overlays and longshots abound in this years rendition of the Derby, including the only filly in the race, Devil May Care, who drew post 11. Almost every horse has a chance to win with a perfect trip, and the possibility of rain makes the outcome of this years Derby even tougher to predict. Well be going with quality angle play horses on our tickets, some of whom will be excellent odds, and were really looking forward to smoking out a big superfecta, even though this years results look like they could involve more luck than skill.

Well have more on this wide open race later this week. In the meantime, the entries for the 136th Kentucky Derby follow below.
