UNLV travels to Honolulu Saturday night to face Hawaii as 3-point favorites with a total of 55.5-56.5. The value here is on the home team getting the points.
Both teams are 0-1 coming into this matchup. UNLV opened the season last Saturday by losing 27-21 to Memphis at home while laying 4.5 points. That’s a program that failed to cover as a home favorite in Week 0. Hawaii lost 37-27 at Stanford in their own Week 0 opener. Neither team has momentum, and neither has demonstrated the kind of form that typically leads to a blowout in Week 1 of any Mountain West season.
The travel factor is real. UNLV is making a five-hour flight to Honolulu. Every West Coast-based team that heads to Hawaii deals with the same challenges — humidity, jet lag, the extended trip. Hawaii teams have historically leveraged their home environment against visiting Mountain West teams. Hawaii leads the all-time series 19-15 despite UNLV winning the past two matchups.
Micah Alejado is Hawaii’s returning starting quarterback, and he threw for 210 yards in the Rainbow Warriors’ 2025 opener against Stanford last year. He’s a sophomore left-handed quarterback with development potential, and he’s now going into his second year in Timmy Chang’s system with a full offseason to work with. Alejado should be able to move the ball against a UNLV defense that just gave up 27 points to Memphis.
UNLV’s offense is legitimate. Their 291 passing yards per game after Week 0 ranked third in the FBS. Their 460 total yards per game ranked third as well. That’s a program built to score, and Dan Mullen’s first-year system has clear offensive design. But their defense is a question mark, and their inability to cover as a home favorite against Memphis shows they’re not the sharp version of the program yet.
This looks like a competitive game between two evenly matched Mountain West programs, both breaking in new pieces and both coming off Week 0 losses. In matchups this close, the home team getting the points is where the value lives. If Hawaii wins outright, we cash the moneyline. If they lose by 1 or 2 points, we cover the spread. Only a Hawaii loss by 4 or more loses the +3 ticket.
Both teams have offensive question marks after Week 0 losses, both have defensive holes, and both are still figuring out their identities under coaches in transition periods.
I looked at the total. It moved from 57.5 down to 55.5-56.5, which suggests some Under money. Given both teams’ offensive potential and defensive vulnerabilities, an argument for the Over exists. But the side offers cleaner value at this number.
