Miami Heat at Charlotte Hornets
Saturday, October 24, 2026
6:00 PM ET, Spectrum Center

The Heat are 3.5-point road favorites over the Hornets with a total of 231.5, and my play is Miami -3.5 (-110).

One of these teams is 0-2 and the other just got booed off its own floor. Somebody has to feel better by Saturday night, and I trust the guy who’s averaging 35.5 points a game to be the one who decides it.

Yes, Miami’s defense has been a crime scene. I’m not going to pretend otherwise. The Heat have allowed 259 points through two games, the most in franchise history to start a season. Anthony Edwards dropped 45 on them, and Detroit led wire to wire Friday. Bam Adebayo barely showed up in that one, Klay Thompson couldn’t find the rim, and the shooting has been cold across the board. It’s ugly.

But Giannis has been the one thing working. Giannis Antetokounmpo opened his Heat career with 35 points, then followed it with 36 points and 12 boards in Friday’s loss. The problem hasn’t been him. It’s been everyone around him and a defense that hasn’t figured out its rotations yet. Erik Spoelstra said before the opener that the goal right now is to “get out there and compete.” Two blowouts later, I’d expect a lot more urgency in a game Miami simply can’t lose.

Charlotte’s offense is running on fumes. The Hornets were a three-point team last season. Nearly half their shots came from deep, and they had one of the league’s better offenses. Without Kon Knueppel (hamstring) and Coby White (calf), that identity is gone. Charlotte is 26 for 99 from three in two games. It has turned it over 45 times. Friday’s 128-81 home loss to Atlanta was the Hawks’ biggest win in franchise history, and the sellout crowd let the Hornets hear it at halftime.

Brandon Miller is 4 for 25 from deep since signing a franchise-record five-year, $209 million extension. Naz Reid has been solid since arriving in the LaMelo Ball trade, but Charlotte is asking him and Dennis Schroder to carry an offense that was built around shooting.

The turnovers are Miami’s way in. Here’s the matchup I keep coming back to. The Heat played at the fastest pace in the league last season, and Giannis in the open floor is a nightmare. Charlotte just handed Atlanta 14 turnovers in the first half alone. Every live-ball giveaway is a runout with Giannis leading the charge. Even with Miami’s half-court defense struggling, that’s a lot of easy points the Hornets can’t afford to give up.

The schedule is a wash. Both teams played at home Friday night, so nobody gets a rest edge. Miami has the flight, but Charlotte has the bigger emotional hangover after a 47-point beating in front of its own fans. This is also a rematch of last spring’s play-in game, so there’s no shortage of familiarity.

The case against Miami. Charles Lee said Knueppel, White and Grant Williams are all making good progress and trending the right way, although he didn’t give a timetable. If two of the three suit up, this line will shrink fast and Charlotte’s spacing gets a lot better. The official injury report hadn’t been filed early Saturday, so check before tip. And the Heat’s defense hasn’t earned anybody’s trust yet. If Miami gives up another 125, a 3.5-point cover gets dicey.

My projection: Heat 115, Hornets 106. Giannis bullies the paint, Miami cashes in on Charlotte’s mistakes, and the Heat finally get off the schneid.

I’m fine laying up to -4.5. If it hits -5.5, or if Knueppel and White both get cleared, I’d step back.

The Pick: Heat -3.5 (-110)
