On Sunday afternoon, the defending NFC champions will travel east to take on the Tennessee Titans. The San Francisco 49ers come in at 4-2 overall, as well as against the spread. Tennessee is 3-3 and sitting in second place of the AFC South. Seeing as how San Fran will be travelling, I could see this game being much closer than the casual fan would assume. The Titans are opening as a four point underdog to the 49ers, while the over/under is set at 39.5 The last time these two teams met, was in November of 2009, a game in which Tennessee went on the road and upset San Francisco by a score of 34-27. Both teams are sitting in second place of their respective divisions. Tennessee is a single game behind Indianapolis in the AFC South, and the Niners are the same distance away from their NFC West division rival, the Seattle Seahawks. Both teams would love a win this week, to help keep the pressure on their foes within the division.

San Francisco comes into this game as the obvious favorite, but on the road, they are only sitting at four point faves. The 49ers are the defending NFC champs, and many experts had them as the favorite to repeat and possibly win the Super Bowl. After suffering two humiliating losses early on in the season to the Colts and to the Seahawks, the Niners were being deemed overrated, and many said Colin Kaepernick’s days were numbered. Well since that time, San Francisco has won three straight games, and in all three they have put up over 30 points. The Niners defense is playing well as of late ranking 6th in all of the NFL in pass defense. The offense has some work to do. Rushing wise, they are getting the job done, but passing is lacking tremendously. San Fran comes into this game with the 2nd worse passing attack in all of the NFL, averaging only 190 yards per game in the air. In order to get to the promise land that San Fran wants, they have no choice but to improve in this area. In my opinion, in order to capture this road victory, the 49ers will need a balanced attack. Tennessee plays fairly good defense and a one dimensional running game will not be sufficient enough to get the win, much less the cover.

The Titans are a pretty good team. Many do not talk about them because other than running-back, Chris Johnson, they do not really have the big name star. Not only that, but their offense is mediocre at best. Tennessee has won games off playing hard nosed defense, and ball control. Chris Johnson has yet to get a rushing TD, and quarterbacks, Jake Locker and Ryan Fitzpatrick have only combined for eight scoring tosses. The key to victory for Tennessee is simple: Keep the opponent under 17 points, and win the game. All three wins recorded by the Titans this season have been in games their defense allowed 17 points or less. This will not be an easy task for the Titans, but the main key to victory in this game will be to slow down Kaepernick and that high scoring Niner offense. If they allow San Francisco to score in the 30s, Tennessee will stand no chance in this game.

Bob’s Pick to Cover the Point Spread: So far this season, both of these teams have done a great job covering their spreads. Like stated earlier, San Fran is 4-2 against the spread, while Tennessee is 4-1-1. The fact that the Titans are at home, makes me almost want to lean their way in this contest. Right now, 72% of the action is on the 49ers which tells me the public is pounding them hard. I tend to fade these types of plays, but I think the 49ers are getting hot. We know their defense is stout, and I just don’t think Tennessee will be able to score enough to win. If San Francisco can score in the mid 20s, I think that is enough to win the game and cover the spread. I am going to ride with the public on this one and bet the San Francisco 49ers to get an easy win in Nashville. I foresee a 27-13 type win for SF. PICK THE SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS!
