This Sunday at 1:00pm, we have an AFC showdown with the Tennessee Titans and the Baltimore Ravens. The Titans enter this game at 2-6 and in 3rd place in the AFC South Division. Baltimore is 5-4 and is actually in 4th in the AFC North, which is becoming the most competitive division in the NFL. Both teams have lost two straight games, and both need a win this Sunday to get themselves back in track.

Although Baltimore is just a game over .500 and on a two game losing streak, the oddsmakers still like them. The Ravens come into this game as a 10 point home favorite and the total points are set at 44. Against the spread this season, Baltimore is 4-4-1, and the Titans are 2-5-1. Double digit spreads in the NFL are always a little tough to predict, but we will take a closer look at these teams and see what we can come up with.

The Baltimore Ravens missed the post season last season, just a year after winning the Super Bowl. This season started out great and it appeared that the Ravens were back on track to make a run at the AFC title again. Starting 5-2, things looked good for this early and they had a perfect opportunity when they played back to back games against division rivals. Well, they lost both. The Bengals edged them 27-24, while just this past weekend, the Pittsburgh Steelers put on an offensive display taking down the Ravens 43-23. After this game against Tennessee, the Ravens will go into their BYE week. This would be the perfect time to get a win, then regroup for the rest of the season. The truly stunning part of this 5-4 record for the Ravens is the fact that they are statistically one of the best teams in all of the NFL. They rank top ten in rushing…both offensively and defensively. Joe Flacco is throwing for about 250 yards a game, which is good for 12th best in the NFL. This team is good, they just have to find a way to finish games and get wins. The key to victory in this game is to play complete football. Stop the run and force the Titans into passing situations. The Tennessee quarterback situation is not a good one. If Baltimore can do this, they could not only win this game, but cover it quite easily.

The Tennessee Titans are a mess, a pure mess. They have had three different starting quarterbacks already this season and are ranked 24th in the NFL in passing yards. The running game, “led” by Bishop Sankey and Shonn Green is only getting right at 100 yards a game. Take this less than average offense, and a defense that is ranked in the lower half of the NFL and what do you have.. well, you have a team that is 2-6 and just one game ahead of the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC South. Tennessee needs a win, bad. The season is already a wash, but a loss here could send them into a tailspin the rest of the season, even worse than they are already in. How can Tennessee cover this spread? Well, I really do not know, but the main goal is to play mistake free offense. Do not turn the ball over and let it lead to easy Baltimore points. The Tennessee Titans must make the Ravens earn each and every point they score. Also, keep this score low. If Baltimore gets into the 30’s, it is a done deal for the Titans. Keep this game in the 20’s, and I could see Tennessee keeping it fairly close.

Bob’s Pick to Cover the Point Spread: Double digit home favorites always scare me in the NFL, even when they are playing teams who are prone to losing. Baltimore is a good team, but they have somewhat lost their “mojo” the last few weeks. Yes, Pittsburgh has been playing above their heads, but I just cannot trust a team who has lost two straight to cover a double digit spread. I like Baltimore to win this game, but it will not be a blow out. Baltimore wins this game by 8. PICK THE TENNESSEE TITANS +10, AND ALSO TAKE BELOW THE TOTAL POINTS OF 44
