Despite having one win through their first ten games, I advised bettors to back the Washington Redskins for an outright victory in last week’s home game against the Lions. It was not a pretty spectacle, but the Redskins got the job done with a late interception followed by a Dustin Hopkins’ game-winning field goal in the final seconds of the game. The victory marked the Redskins first win under interim head coach Bill Callahan, and now Washington will have the opportunity to aim at back to back victories when they go on the road to face the Carolina Panthers who have dropped three straight games.

Despite being 10 point underdogs last week at New Orleans, the Carolina Panthers played well enough to win. Unfortunately, kicker Joey Slye missed two costly PATs and then missed another embarrassing 28 yards “go ahead” field goal, from dead center of the field, with just 4 minutes to go in the game. The missed kicks overshadowed a rather impressive Panthers performance as they stood toe to toe with one of the best teams in the NFC for 60 minutes. With the heat turning up on head coach Ron Rivera, Panthers fans are not settling for moral victories and this weekend’s game against the 2-9 SU Redskins is becoming an absolute must-win situation for the coaching staff.

Bet against the Washington offense against Carolina

The main reason I believe the Redskins would pull out the victory last week included the match-ups on both sides of the football combined with a trend that featured the Redskins winning 16 of the previous 17 in Landover. The reasons for backing the Redskins had nothing to do with quarterback Dwayne Haskins and had everything to wit the rushing attack against a poor Detroit run stop unit. This week the match-up has some similarities against another weak run stop unit that has allowed 127.5 yards per game on the ground.

However paper stats can be misleading as the Panthers have faced the toughest schedule in the league against opposing rush units. Carolina’s defense is actually pretty decent upfront. More importantly, coach Ron Rivera is a defensive-minded talent, and he knows that the key to beating the Redskins will be to force the group into obvious passing situations. Haskins has been awful this season, completing just 54% passing with six picks and only two passing touchdowns in just five games. I personally have no idea why Haskins continues to be the starter, but I am not the one calling the shots. The Panthers also own one of the best pressuring defenses in the league averaging 3.7 sacks per game. Unless the defense completely implodes against the run, this is a considerable upside match-up for the Panthers!

Christian McCaffrey primed for another big week against Redskins

The strength of the Redskins defense has been against the pass where they rank 11th in the NFL yielding just 231 yards per game. Against the run, the Redskins have been far worse, ranking 28th, allowing 137.5 yards per game. Enemy offenses have consistently run the ball effectively against the Redskins defensive front, and that will be the plan of attack again this week when the Panthers feature a heavy dose of RB Christian McCaffrey. Not only is this an excellent match-up for McCaffrey between the tackles, but this will also be a great match-up in the passing game. The Redskins have struggled against receiving backs, and this is an area where McCaffrey shines with 23 targets, 20 catches, 190 receiving yards, and one touchdown over the last two games. I am sure game manager Kyle Allen will find ways to contribute, but in reality, the Panthers will ride McCaffrey to the Promise Land in week 13.
