Roulette: Betting on Red

There are 18 red numbers and 18 black numbers on every Roulette wheel. There are a lot of different bets that you can make when playing Roulette, as you can make straight bets (one single bet) or combination bets (numerous bets). In Roulette there are both inside bets (on the 36 numbers) and outside bets (the boxes that are on the outside of the numbers such as black, red, odd, even ect..).
One of the outside bets that you can make is the straight red bet. Outside the 36 numbers there is a red box, which is the red bet. If you place your bet in the red box, you are betting that when the Roulette wheel is spun that the ball will land on one of the 18 red numbers that is on the wheel. If you bet on red and the ball lands on one of the 18 red numbers, you will win your bet. Since there are 18 black numbers and 18 red numbers you would think that it is a 50/50 bet, but this is not true, as the house has to have an edge and that edge is with the green zero or zeros on the table.

In American Roulette there are 2 zero boxes (0 and 00) and in European Roulette there is only one zero box. Therefore, the house edge is higher in American Roulette. The house edge for American Roulette is 5.3% and 2.7% for European Roulette. This is the case because it is more likely that when the wheel is spun that it will hit 2 zero boxes instead of only 1.
A red bet can be made by itself or with a combination of other bets. There is typically a betting minimum, which is the minimum amount you have to bet on each box. Therefore, if the betting minimum at a Roulette table is $5, then you have to bet at least $5 on the red box if you want to bet on red. There is also usually a table maximum, which is the maximum amount you can bet. Therefore, if the table maximum is $1,000 that is the max amount you bet on the whole table on one spin. You can either bet $1,000 on a single bet, such as on red, or a combination of bets spread on the table, but you cannot bet more than $1,000.
