Buffalo is a 1.5-point road favorite at Houston with a total of 44.5. My play is the Texans getting the points at home.

Let me start with what the market is telling us. Two teams that both made the divisional round of the playoffs last year, both bringing back their franchise quarterbacks, and the spread is just 1.5. That’s about as pick-em as it gets in the NFL. When the market has a game this tight, the value tends to live with the home team getting the points, and that’s what we have here.

C.J. Stroud is entering his fourth year in the NFL and this is a contract year — Texans GM Nick Caserio publicly set Week 1 as the cutoff for extension talks. That’s a specific motivator. Stroud is playing for a nine-figure deal starting Sunday, and while contract-year motivation doesn’t always show up in Week 1, it’s a factor for a quarterback trying to prove he’s still a top-tier NFL passer. He’ll be aggressive. He’ll take shots. He wants to make a statement.

Nico Collins is healthy for Week 1. He led the NFL in receiving yards per game last year (113.4) before injuries slowed him down. He’s the Texans’ true WR1 and one of the most difficult receivers in the NFL to cover. When Stroud has Collins on the field, this offense operates at a completely different level. Kayshon Boutte gives them another vertical threat after the mid-August trade with New England, and Xavier Hutchinson and Jaylin Noel round out the receiving corps.

The defense is the real story though. DeMeco Ryans is in Year 4 as head coach, and he’s built one of the more consistent defensive units in the AFC. Will Anderson, Danielle Hunter, and Azeez Al-Shaair anchor a front seven that generates real pressure. Josh Allen has had his issues against Houston in the past — including a 23-20 Texans win in 2024 where the Bills couldn’t sustain drives after early scoring.

That specific matchup trend matters. The Under has hit in 7 of the last 10 meetings between these teams. That’s a defensive dynamic that shows up regardless of coaching changes or personnel shuffles, because both teams tend to play control-oriented football against each other. Bills at Texans specifically tends to be a lower-scoring, closer-margin game than the market expects.

Buffalo also has real questions on the road early in the season. Josh Allen is fresh off a preseason where he took minimal snaps, and traveling to Houston in September means dealing with heat and humidity that his players aren’t used to. Bills teams have historically had their worst road trips in warm-weather AFC South environments. That’s an intangible factor, but it shows up in second-half fatigue.

The 1.5-point spread would require Buffalo to win by 2 or more. Given the defensive quality on both sides, the head-to-head Under trend, and the situational factors working against a Bills blowout, the more likely outcomes are Texans winning outright or Bills winning by a field goal or less. Either scenario cashes +1.5.

The Pick: Houston Texans +1.5
