Buffalo is a 4.5-point home favorite over Detroit with a total of 53.5. My play is the Over.

The total is the highest on the entire Week 2 NFL board for a reason. Both offenses just went shootout mode in Week 1, and the market has moved the number up from 52.5 to 53.5 as both public and sharp money continues to pile onto the Over side. When the market pushes a total from opener to 53.5 for a Thursday night game, they’re telling you something specific about how these two teams will play against each other.

Josh Allen and the Bills just put up 36 points in a 36-31 shootout win over Houston in Week 1. That was against a Texans defense that’s supposed to be good — Anderson, Hunter, and the front seven are legitimately talented — and the Bills still moved the ball at will. Allen is at the peak of his powers as a quarterback, and his weapons on offense are dialed in. Now they’re opening a brand-new Highmark Stadium against a Lions team with defensive issues. The Bills are going to score.

Detroit is in the same profile on offense. Their Week 1 game was a shootout as well, meaning both sides of the ball are producing scoring rates well above the league average. Jared Goff is entering his fourth year under Dan Campbell and has one of the deepest skill position groups in football. Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery combine for a formidable running attack, Amon-Ra St. Brown is a top-tier receiver, and Sam LaPorta is one of the best receiving tight ends in the game. Against a Bills defense that gave up 31 points to Houston in Week 1, Detroit should be able to counter Buffalo’s scoring with plenty of their own.

The stadium opening factor also matters here. New venue, primetime national broadcast, sold-out crowd, and a home team with a chance to make an emotional statement — that’s the exact recipe for aggressive offensive play calling. Sean McDermott won’t be conservative in his approach on Thursday. He’ll want to score points, control the game, and give his team’s fans an unforgettable first game in the new building.

Detroit will match aggression with aggression. Drew Petzing is installing a new offensive scheme after replacing John Morton, and Week 1 showed the Lions can move the ball. Petzing’s Arizona offense was play-action heavy with big-play potential, and Goff has the arm strength and touch to hit downfield throws. Against a Bills defense that’s still integrating new pieces, the Lions should find opportunities for explosive plays.

The math on 53.5 is easily approachable. If both teams score in the 30s — which is what their Week 1 performances suggest — we hit 60+ points total. Even if one team is limited to 24-27 and the other scores 31-34, we’re at 55-61 total. Only if both teams’ offenses are stopped cold would the total stay under 53.5, and neither team showed any indication of that being the case in Week 1.

I looked at the side. Lions +4.5 has legitimate value with 74% of the public backing Detroit and Detroit’s offense capable of matching Buffalo’s production. But the sharp money has moved the line the other way toward Bills, and the total offers a cleaner, more analytically supported play than trying to pick the side. Betting the total sidesteps the specific question of which offense wins and simply requires both to score at expected levels.

The Pick: Lions/Bills Over 53.5
