Cleveland Browns at New Orleans Saints

The Saints are 1.5-point favorites at most books with a total of 42.5, and my play is the Browns +1.5.
New Orleans hasn’t won a home game all year. Four tries in the Superdome, four losses, and now the market wants us to lay a price with them because Cleveland got its face kicked in at Pittsburgh. I’ll take the other side of that conversation.
Yes, Pittsburgh was ugly. The Steelers beat Cleveland 27-6, sacked Deshaun Watson eight times, held the Browns to 34 rushing yards and forced two lost fumbles. Todd Monken didn’t sugarcoat it on Monday. “Ultimately eight sacks is below the line,” he said, and he spread the blame across protection, play calling and Watson holding the ball. He also said, “We haven’t really even scratched the surface yet of where we can be,” which is either confidence or denial depending on how you feel about a team that has been sacked 33 times, the most in the league.
Here’s the thing, though. Cleveland is still 5-3 and 5-3 against the spread. One bad afternoon on the road against a division rival doesn’t erase half a season of grinding out wins, and the market has already noticed: this line opened at Saints -3.5 and money has pushed it down to a point and a half.
The Saints can’t get off the field
This is the number that sells me. New Orleans has one of the leakiest defenses in football. By nflverse play-by-play data tracked at GordStats, the Saints rank 28th in expected points allowed per play and 31st in success rate allowed, meaning opponents stay ahead of the chains on almost half their snaps. They also let teams convert half their third downs, 30th in the league.
So the Browns’ biggest problem, an offense that stalls out, is going up against a defense that rarely forces anyone to stall. Cleveland doesn’t need to look like the Chiefs. It needs to stay on schedule, and New Orleans keeps letting teams do exactly that.

Shough can throw it, but this is the wrong secondary to pick on
Tyler Shough has been a pleasant surprise with 13 touchdown passes, and the Saints’ offense lives through the air. The trouble is that New Orleans has no ground game to lean on. The Saints ran for 18 yards in their Paris loss to the Steelers and rank 25th in rushing efficiency. When a team can’t run, the defense knows what’s coming.
Cleveland’s pass defense is the strong half of its roster, ninth in the league by pass efficiency allowed and giving up just 196.6 passing yards a game. Chris Olave opened the year with three 100-yard games in his first four but hasn’t topped 56 yards in any of his last three. Add a Saints offense that coughs it up on 17% of its drives, 29th in the league, and you’ve got a home favorite that can beat itself.
Why I could be wrong
The pass rush is the obvious one. Cleveland’s protection ranks dead last in sack rate allowed, and the Saints come in 11th at getting home, rested off a bye. If Watson is running for his life again, the Browns’ red-zone offense (worst in the league at finishing drives with touchdowns) won’t bail him out. New Orleans has also won the last three meetings in this series, and the Saints are lethal once they get inside the 20, second in the league in red-zone touchdown rate. Saints right guard Cesar Ruiz and safety Justin Reid are both questionable, so check the final reports.
The bottom line. This isn’t a hammer. It’s a short number on a home team that has lost every game in its building, against a 5-3 club looking to answer a bad week. I’d play Cleveland down to pick’em and sprinkle the moneyline if it’s plus money.
