The Chicago Bears are 6-point favorites over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday Night Football, with a total of 47.5 at most books. My play is the Buccaneers +6.

This line opened at Chicago -3.5. Then the Bears went into Seattle on Monday night and smacked the defending champs 34-17, and the number sprinted to 6 and, at a couple of shops, 6.5. That’s a big jump for a game between a team riding a hot streak and a team riding a slightly hotter one.

Chicago deserves the hype. The Bears are 6-2, and NFL Research notes they’re the first team ever to beat both of last season’s Super Bowl teams in back-to-back prime-time games. Caleb Williams went 24-of-34 for 247 yards and no picks in Seattle, and the Bears are 3-0 since he returned to the lineup in Week 6. Jeffery Simmons, fresh off the trade from Tennessee, looked like a wrecking ball in his debut.

But I’ve seen enough of the Tampa Bay defense to know it isn’t going to roll over on national TV.

Todd Bowles has built a brick wall

By EPA per play, the Bucs have the second-best defense in the NFL. They’re second against the pass and third against the run, which means there’s no soft spot to pick on. In the last two weeks they held Carolina to 13 points and shut out Atlanta 16-0, picking off Michael Penix four times. Tampa Bay is giving up just 18.9 points a game.

Chicago’s offense is good, but it isn’t flawless. D’Andre Swift scored three touchdowns Monday on 27 carries that averaged just 2.6 yards. The Bears are also 25th in turnover margin, and Colston Loveland’s fumble on Monday nearly let Seattle back in it. A turnover-prone offense against a ball-hawking defense is how six-point favorites end up sweating.

The Bucs don’t need Baker to be a hero

Tampa Bay ran for a franchise-record 324 yards against Atlanta. Bucky Irving went for 170 and Kenny Gainwell for 140, and Baker Mayfield didn’t complete a pass. The Bucs average 168.6 rushing yards a game. That’s a recipe for shortening the game, draining the clock and keeping Williams on the sideline. When you’re getting six points, fewer possessions are your friend.

Mayfield is healthy after missing three games with a thumb injury, and he was blunt about the passing game: “I’m very confident in the fact that we’ll be just fine.” He doesn’t have to be great. He has to protect the ball and hit a couple of shots when Chicago loads the box.

Why could I be wrong? Tampa Bay’s passing offense is 30th in EPA per dropback, and if the Bears’ run defense, which allows just 86.8 rushing yards a game, takes away the ground game, the Bucs could stall out. Chicago will also have home field on a cool, 50-degree night with a Soldier Field crowd that smells a contender. Emeka Egbuka (foot) is also questionable, and losing him would thin out a receiving group that’s already missing Jalen McMillan. On the Chicago side, keep an eye on Grady Jarrett (groin).

I’d take Tampa Bay down to +5.5. If it climbs to 7, even better.

Projected score: Bears 23, Buccaneers 20. It’s a field-position fight that comes down to the fourth quarter, and the points carry the ticket.

The Pick: Buccaneers +6 (-108)
