Houston Texans at Los Angeles Chargers

The Texans are 4.5-point road favorites across most books, with the total sitting at 40.5, and my play is Texans -4.5.
What do you call a team that can’t win and can’t cover? The Chargers, apparently. Los Angeles is 0-7 straight up and 0-6-1 against the spread, and the market has finally stopped waiting for the bounce. This line opened with the Chargers as a 1.5-point favorite. It’s now Houston by 4.5, a six-point swing toward a 2-5 team. That’s not a market overreaction. That’s a market catching up.
The Chargers’ offense has hit rock bottom and started digging
Los Angeles has gone two straight games without a touchdown, capped by a 24-9 loss to the Rams last Sunday in their first game out of the bye. ESPN notes the Chargers are just the sixth team in the Super Bowl era to start 0-7 a year after making the playoffs. Justin Herbert has thrown a league-high 10 interceptions and fumbled seven times. Jim Harbaugh is sticking with Mike McDaniel as the play-caller and isn’t offering much else, saying “we’re the only ones that can fix it.”
The numbers are as bad as the vibes. In the nflverse play-by-play data, the Chargers rank dead last in EPA per play (how many points each snap adds or costs) and dead last in success rate. Not bottom five. Last, in both. Their running game isn’t bailing anyone out either, with Omarion Hampton at 309 yards on 89 carries.

Stroud is the best player on the field, and he’s rested
Houston’s 2-5 record lies about its offense. C.J. Stroud has 1,867 yards, 11 touchdowns and one interception, and the Texans rank 12th in EPA per dropback. They’ve hung 30-plus on Dallas and Jacksonville. DeMeco Ryans spent the bye cleaning up penalties and tackling, and he sounded like a coach who liked what he saw. “It felt like the bye came at the perfect time for us,” he told reporters Monday, adding that “C.J. is playing extremely well.”
The receiver room took a hit with Jaylin Noel on IR, but Nico Collins has 24 catches for 329 yards and three scores in five games, per SI. He gets a Chargers secondary with three corners listed questionable: Donte Jackson, Rodney Shelley and Deane Leonard. On the other side, Will Anderson Jr. has 7.5 sacks and gets to tee off on a quarterback who’s already giving the ball away.
The case against me
The Chargers’ defense is legitimately good. It ranks eighth in EPA per play allowed in my nflverse count, and it’s top 10 against the pass. That’s why Chargers games are 6-1 to the under. Houston can’t run it either: the Texans are 25th in EPA per rush, and David Montgomery is questionable with a groin injury. Their own defense has leaked, too. Ryans admitted, “We’ve missed a ton of tackles.” And remember this Houston team lost in overtime to the Giants as a 10-point favorite in its last game before the bye. Laying points with a 2-5 team is never comfortable, and the six-point move means you’re not getting a bargain. I’d play this up to -5, but at -5.5 I’d look elsewhere.
Still, one side has a quarterback protecting the ball and one has a quarterback leading the league in picks. In a low-scoring game, that’s the difference, and it’s worth more than 4.5 points.
Projected score: Texans 23, Chargers 13
The Pick: Texans -4.5
