Buffalo is a 7-point home favorite over the Chargers with a total of 50.5. My play is the Under.

The Chargers’ offensive collapse is the entry point here. Los Angeles has scored exactly 14 points in each of their first two games — both 26-14 losses to divisional opponents. That’s not a coincidence. The Chargers offense has been unable to sustain drives, unable to protect the football, and unable to create explosive plays. Justin Herbert threw two interceptions and had three fumbles in Week 2 alone. His statline (15-of-27, 192 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT) tells the story of an offense in complete disarray.

Los Angeles has scored a touchdown on just 7.7% of their possessions through two games. That’s among the lowest rates in the NFL. Against Buffalo’s defense — which has the third-highest pressure rate in the league and ranks third in PFF pass rush grade — the Chargers will face constant harassment. Herbert will get sacked multiple times, throw off his back foot, and continue his turnover-prone start to the season. That translates directly to fewer possessions, shorter drives, and lower point totals for the Chargers.

Realistically, Los Angeles is looking at 10-14 points in this game. Herbert isn’t suddenly going to shake off two weeks of ugly football against a top-tier Bills defense in a hostile road environment. That’s a hard ceiling on the total. Even if Buffalo puts up 34-38 points (which is very possible given Josh Allen’s MVP-caliber start), we’re looking at combined totals of 44-52 points — the low end of the current 50.5 line.

Josh Allen has been outstanding. He’s the +250 favorite for MVP, has completed 66.7% of his throws for 582 yards and five touchdowns through two games, and added 92 rushing yards with four rushing scores. Allen and the Bills offense have scored a touchdown on 15.9% of their possessions — the highest rate in the NFL. But even at that elite pace, Buffalo’s ceiling in a game where they’re leading comfortably by halftime is 34-38 points. Sean McDermott will pull back on the aggressiveness in the fourth quarter, run the ball with James Cook, and grind out the clock rather than pushing for 45+ points.

The Chargers’ Under history supports the play too. Under is 8-2 in the Chargers’ last 10 games — a specific pattern of low-scoring outcomes that shows up regardless of the opponent. That trend combined with the current Chargers offensive dysfunction and Buffalo’s own game-management tendencies produces the exact scenario where totals stay under.

Realistic outcomes: Bills 31, Chargers 10 (41 total); Bills 27, Chargers 14 (41 total); Bills 34, Chargers 17 (51 total, over by 0.5); or Bills 28, Chargers 21 (49 total, under by 1.5). Three of four scenarios stay under 50.5, and the fourth is a close push. Given the Chargers’ actual scoring ceiling of 14-17 points and Buffalo’s typical scoring ceiling in comfortable wins of 31-38, the math simply doesn’t work for the Over.

The Pick: Chargers/Bills Under 50.5
