The Guardians are home favorites at -157 in Game 2 of the ALDS after dropping Game 1. The White Sox sit at +130 on the moneyline. The total is 6.5. My play is the White Sox at +130.

Gavin Williams’ layoff is the entry point here. Cleveland’s Game 2 starter went 14-8 with a 3.76 ERA, but he’s been a different pitcher on extra rest this season. Williams posted a 5.03 ERA when given an extra day or more between starts, and opponents had an OPS 62 points higher against him with six or more days off compared to his normal routine. He hasn’t pitched in well over a week heading into his postseason start. Williams also went 1-3 in four starts against Chicago this season, even though he struck out at least six in every one of them.

Chicago’s pitching plan has Cleveland’s number. Anthony Kay opens, and he’s been nearly untouchable against the Guardians this season, with a 1.35 ERA and a sub-1.00 WHIP while holding them to a .171 batting average and a 44 OPS+. Sean Burke is expected to follow, and he has a 1.04 ERA in 17 innings against Cleveland. That’s the same bullpen-heavy approach Will Venable used to shut the Guardians out in Game 1.

Game 1 showed how well that approach can work. Five White Sox pitchers combined on a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts in a 3-0 win. Hagen Smith retired the first eight batters he faced, and Grant Taylor worked four innings of relief with six strikeouts to become the first pitcher since 2017 to record a postseason save of four-plus innings. Cleveland loaded the bases with two outs in both the third and fourth innings and came away with nothing. Munetaka Murakami drove a first-pitch sinker 440 feet for a two-run homer, and Colson Montgomery added an RBI double.

The White Sox are rolling. Chicago has won nine of its last 11 games and is 3-0 in the postseason after sweeping Houston and taking Game 1 in Cleveland. The White Sox also went 38-23 as road underdogs this season. Cleveland went 85-77 and was just over .500 at home.

The risk is that Williams shakes off the rust and pitches like the starter who struck out six or more against Chicago every time he faced them. But the matchup on the other side is built around two arms Cleveland hasn’t been able to touch, and the Guardians’ offense just went quiet with runners on base in Game 1. In what should be another low-scoring game, plus money on the team with the pitching edge is the right side.

Realistic outcomes: White Sox 4, Guardians 2 (White Sox win); White Sox 3, Guardians 1 (White Sox win); Guardians 4, White Sox 2 (Guardians win); or Guardians 3, White Sox 2 (Guardians win). This game is close to a coin flip, and at +130 the White Sox are the value side.
