No. 11 Utah at Colorado
Saturday, October 17, 2026
10:15 PM ET, Folsom Field, Boulder, CO

No. 11 Utah is a 15.5-point road favorite at Colorado, and the total sits at 49.5. My play is Utah -15.5.

Nobody believes in Colorado right now. The Buffs are 1-4 against the spread, have lost three straight and are scoring 18.6 points a game, 122nd in the country. Even Deion Sanders sounded like he was scouting a juggernaut at his Tuesday press conference, calling Utah “really a darn good football team. Probably the best team we’re going to face this season.”

Usually this is where I’d tell you the crowd has it wrong. Not this week. The doubt around Coach Prime’s team is an accurate scouting report, and it starts with the game plan.

Coach Prime’s new script runs straight into Utah’s best wall

Sanders came out of a messy bye week with a plan. Isaac Wilson, the Utah transfer, gets the start against his old team (“Okay, Isaac’s starting. Isaac’s starting.”), and the offense is going to lean on the ground game. “We don’t want to throw the ball 40-some times. We want to keep the ball in between 17 and 24 pass attempts…” he said.

You can see why. Wilson threw three interceptions in the 29-7 home loss to Texas Tech, which earned him some tongue-in-cheek advice from his coach: “Make sure you throw the ball to the guys on our team.” Colorado coughs the ball up more than twice a game, so fewer throws makes sense.

It just doesn’t make sense against this defense. A year ago Utah was soft against the run. This season the Utes allow 78.8 rushing yards a game, ninth in FBS, less than half of what they gave up in 2025.

So Colorado wants to spend Saturday night running into one of the stingiest fronts in the country, with an offense that stays on schedule (gains enough on a play to stay ahead of the chains) only about four times in ten, one of the worst rates in FBS. That means a lot of third-and-long, which puts the game right back on Wilson’s arm anyway. His best help might not be there, either. Sanders said of receiver Danny Scudero (ankle), “I don’t know if he’s going to be ready by this week.” Joseph Williams can’t carry the passing game by himself.

Wayshawn Parker is about to make Folsom Field very quiet

Now flip it around. Morgan Scalley’s first full season as head coach has Utah 5-0 for the first time since 2015, and the Utes are the only unbeaten FBS team to win every game by at least 14 points. Remember that when you look at a 15.5-point spread.

Running back Wayshawn Parker is the hammer. He’s averaging 7.6 yards a carry, has topped 170 rushing yards in back-to-back games and has piled up 11 total touchdowns. Quarterback Devon Dampier is the reason defenses can’t just stack the box against him. He’s completing about 72% of his passes with 12 touchdowns and two picks, and he’ll punish you with his legs. Put it together and Utah stays on schedule more often than all but five offenses in the country.

Colorado’s defense is respectable, but respectable won’t cut it here. SP+, a power rating built on how efficiently teams play down to down, has Utah seventh nationally and Colorado 84th. One model projects Utah 36-14, and another lands on 34-16. Both say Utah should be laying more than 15.5.

The series has been brutal for Boulder, too. Utah has won eight of the last nine in this series, including last year’s 53-7 beatdown in Salt Lake City that kicked off Colorado’s five-game slide to end 2025.

Altitude, a late kick and a rested Buffs team: my worry list

Colorado has had 14 days to prepare, while Utah is on a normal week. Laying a big number at altitude with a 10:15 PM ET kickoff isn’t comfortable. The Buffs’ front also lives in the backfield, with 8.8 tackles for loss per game, fourth nationally according to Sanders. It gets nastier if edge rusher Lamont Lester Jr. returns; Sanders said “we got to get him back on the field,” but his status for Saturday hasn’t been confirmed. There could be a wrinkle at quarterback too, with USA Today reporting that freshman dual-threat Kaneal Sweetwyne might see snaps.

The line has already slipped from -16.5 to -15.5, and the last time Utah visited Folsom Field, in 2024, Colorado won 49-24. And if Utah goes up three scores early and pulls its starters, a late Buffs touchdown could sneak in through the back door.

Those are what-ifs. What has already happened points one way. Utah is 5-0 against the spread. Colorado is 0-2 ATS at home. I’ll keep backing the team that cashes every week.

Utah by 18 sounds about right: Utah 34, Colorado 16. It’s still a bet at -17.5.

The Pick: Utah -15.5
