No. 16 Mississippi State at No. 22 LSU
Saturday, October 17, 2026
12:00 PM ET, Tiger Stadium, Baton Rouge

LSU is a 14-point favorite with the total at 58.5. My play is LSU -14.

The higher-ranked team is the wrong side of this number. Mississippi State sits at No. 16, LSU at No. 22, and the books still want you to lay two touchdowns with the Tigers in Baton Rouge. That ranking gap is noise. Death Valley is not.

Fourteen points in a building that eats road teams. LSU is 4-0 at home and has not been polite about it, beating Clemson by 41 and Texas A&M by 29 before rolling Louisiana Tech and McNeese. Both Tiger losses came on the road, at Ole Miss and in overtime at Kentucky. TeamRankings grades LSU’s home form as the second-best in the country. Jeff Lebby’s Bulldogs are a real rebuild story, with road wins at Minnesota and South Carolina before knocking off Missouri. But we’ve already seen what happens when they meet an elite SEC roster that can push them around up front: Alabama hung 56 on them in Starkville.

LSU wins the snap-by-snap fight by a mile. Game on Paper’s adjusted EPA, which measures how many points a team adds or gives away per play after accounting for the opponent, has LSU third in the nation and Mississippi State 24th. Stretch that gap over a normal game’s worth of snaps and it’s worth about 12 points before the crowd even gets loud. The matchup I care about most is LSU’s ground game, which piles up 214 rushing yards a game, against a Bulldog defense that ranks outside the top 100 at keeping offenses behind schedule. State is also down a defensive lineman for the season.

The other side of the ball is no picnic for State either. LSU’s defense ranks fourth in that same adjusted-EPA measure, gives up just 176 passing yards a game, and lives in opposing backfields with close to four sacks a game. That’s a bad place to bring a pass-first road offense.

Kamario Taylor’s foot is the whole week, and the number already knows it. This opened LSU -10.5 and sits at -14 almost everywhere (FanDuel is hanging -14.5), with Taylor’s status the biggest unknown in the building. The Bulldogs’ quarterback is questionable after aggravating a foot injury against Alabama, and Lebby kept it short: “Wednesday is going to do all the talking.” I don’t need Taylor on the sideline to like this. If he’s limited or out, 14 gets soft. If he plays, you’re still laying two touchdowns with a top-10 SP+ team in its own stadium against an offense missing receiver Ayden Williams and another wideout, with running back Fluff Bothwell nursing a foot issue of his own. ESPN’s forecast also calls for gusty wind, which favors the team that wants to run it. That’s LSU.

The case against laying two touchdowns. Sam Leavitt leads the SEC with eight interceptions, and Lane Kiffin admits his team is “too up and down, in all phases of the game.” Hand Mississippi State a couple of free possessions and a 14-point favorite starts sweating. The Bulldogs’ offense is legit, too: Anthony Evans III leads the SEC with about 115 receiving yards a game, and State is 4-1 against the spread. The models are lower than the market (Cleatz has this closer to LSU -11.6), so we’re paying for the move. Fourteen is also a push number, and at -14.5 you lose the tie. If Taylor is cleared as a full go, treat this as a solid lean rather than a hammer, and give LSU’s own injury list a look Saturday morning, with tight end Trey’Dez Green questionable and receiver Jayce Brown coming off a missed game at Kentucky.

Put it on the board as LSU 35, Mississippi State 17, with the Tigers’ run game wearing down the Bulldogs after halftime.

The Pick: LSU -14
