Wisconsin vs UCLA Upset Pick: Badgers +2.5 at the Rose Bowl

UCLA is a 2.5-point favorite over Wisconsin, and the total is 43.5. My play is Wisconsin +2.5.

Ty Dieffenbach has thrown six passes as an FBS quarterback. On Saturday night, with the country watching on NBC, he gets the keys to a 5-0, 12th-ranked team and has to drive it straight into the best pass defense in America. No pressure, kid.

The former Cal Poly starter takes over because Nico Iamaleava hurt his knee in last week’s 17-15 win at Oregon and is expected to miss the rest of the season. Dieffenbach looked fine in relief, going 3-for-6 for 43 yards and a touchdown, and Bob Chesney liked what he saw: “He threw some really nice, accurate footballs, catchable footballs… He stepped up in the moment where we needed him to.” Chesney also delivered the line of the week to his depth chart: “when that light shines on you, you’re either exposed or revealed.” The light doesn’t get any brighter than this. At Cal Poly last season he completed 56.8% with nine touchdowns and nine interceptions — a game manager, not a shootout artist.

He’s also walking into a buzzsaw. Wisconsin ranks first in the nation in EPA allowed per dropback. Translation: nobody does a better job of turning the other team’s pass plays into wasted downs. The Badgers have given up just seven plays of 20 or more yards all season, fewest in the country, and opponents have gone 20 straight possessions without a touchdown going back to the Penn State game. Even with Iamaleava, UCLA’s passing game ranked 96th in efficiency. Swap in a first-time starter and the Bruins become a one-dimensional offense.

That one dimension is dangerous, though. Wayne Knight has 548 yards and a rushing touchdown in all five games, the first Bruin to do that since Maurice Jones-Drew in 2005. UCLA’s backfield trio averages 6.9 yards a carry, and the run game ranks fourth nationally in efficiency against a Wisconsin run defense that’s good, not great. Luke Fickell has noticed: “If there’s one thing they do a better job than we’ve seen this year is finding ways to get the edge and finding ways to bounce the edge.” The game turns on whether the Badgers can keep Knight bottled up and make a rookie win it with his arm. I think they can.

The ratings were set before the knee buckled. Adjust for opponents and these teams are basically twins: Wisconsin sits sixth nationally in net adjusted EPA per play and UCLA ninth. SP+ and FPI both had UCLA favored by a field goal or so before Iamaleava went down. Factor in the quarterback downgrade and a field goal is about as much as the Bruins should be laying. The situation helps Wisconsin, too. The Badgers come in rested off a bye, having won four straight, including a comeback from 17-0 down to win at Penn State as a 9.5-point dog. UCLA comes off a bruising night in Eugene that it survived thanks to seven takeaways, five of them fumble recoveries. That kind of luck doesn’t travel week to week. The Bruins have also been sloppy, piling up 421 penalty yards, and that’s a lot of free yardage to hand out in a game this tight.

There’s a little history in Pasadena, too. UCLA has never beaten Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl stadium, losing the 1994 and 1999 Rose Bowl Games, and the Badgers have won the last three meetings. Trivia, not a reason to bet — but Fickell, a year removed from 4-8, will take the vibes.

The Badgers’ offense won’t win any beauty contests

Their offense is a grind, and not always the good kind. They’re last in the country in rushing success rate, and they routinely lose on early downs. That leaves Colton Joseph facing a lot of third-and-long against a UCLA defense that ranks second nationally in EPA allowed per drive. Joseph has five interceptions, three of them at Penn State. UCLA linebacker Sammy Omosigho leads FBS with four forced fumbles. Center Austin Kawecki is uncertain with a club on his snapping hand, and the Big Ten availability report is due Wednesday night, so check it. UCLA also wins the field-position battle as well as almost anyone, and short fields swing games with totals in the low 40s. The heavy juice on UCLA -2.5 hints that this line could move back to 3. If it does, grab the extra half-point.

Even so, I trust the defense that doesn’t give up big plays against a quarterback who will need some to win. Wisconsin grinds out a couple long drives, Joseph hits one big throw, and the Bruins’ 5-0 start ends at the Rose Bowl.

I’ve got the Badgers winning it outright: Wisconsin 20, UCLA 17.
