Florida State at No. 3 Miami
Saturday, October 17, 2026
7:00 PM ET, Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida

Miami is a 21.5-point favorite over Florida State, and the total is 55.5. My play is Miami -21.5.

Right now, the best rivalry in Florida is one program looking down at the other.

Mario Cristobal still calls it “my favorite and the best rivalry in sports,” and he’s right to sell it that way. But the Hurricanes are 5-0, ranked third, and lead FBS in both points scored and points allowed. Florida State is 3-3, just got run over 44-20 at Louisville, and is 10-20 since the 2023 ACC title game.

Miami is going for its third straight win in the series, and the market already agrees with where this is headed. The line opened in the high teens at most books and has climbed to 21.5. I don’t think it’s done being right.

Mensah hasn’t thrown a pick, and Florida State can’t cover anybody

Darian Mensah is completing 84.2 percent of his passes with 15 touchdowns and zero interceptions. Gameonpaper has Miami’s offense second in the country in opponent-adjusted efficiency, and the passing game is the reason: Miami adds about four-tenths of a point every time Mensah drops back, which is ridiculous. Malachi Toney is a Heisman name, too, with six touchdown catches already.

Then check what’s waiting for them. Florida State’s defense ranks 116th in that same adjusted efficiency measure, meaning it gives up value on a typical play. It’s 122nd in yards allowed, and Louisville just ran for 397 yards on it. Mike Norvell said it plainly: “We want to be a defense that sets the edge. We want to have an edge to our defense. We’re not doing that good enough.” Miami gets that defense coming off a bye.

Florida State’s best punch lands on Miami’s thickest armor

The Seminoles do have a real offense, and it lives on the ground. Ashton Daniels has 10 rushing touchdowns, a single-season FSU record for a quarterback, and Ousmane Kromah has gone over 80 yards in all six games. FSU’s offense ranks 14th in adjusted efficiency. That would be a problem for most defenses.

Miami isn’t most defenses against the run. The Hurricanes allow 42.6 rushing yards a game, best in the nation. They also come out of the bye with their healthiest defense since the opener, with CBs Xavier Lucas and Damari Brown, DE Marquise Lightfoot and LB Ezekiel Marcelin all back and fully cleared. If the run game stalls, Florida State has to put the ball in Daniels’ hands as a passer. He has thrown seven interceptions, and FSU is minus-3 in turnover margin while Miami is plus-3.

Eleven straight road losses and a seat getting hotter

Florida State hasn’t won a road game since beating Florida on Nov. 25, 2023. That’s 11 straight road losses. According to Field Level Media, speculation about Norvell’s job security has intensified again this week. On Tuesday, FSU dismissed freshman CB Chuck Kennon, the top recruit in its 2026 class, for conduct detrimental to the team. The Seminoles were already without RB Samuel Singleton Jr. for a long stretch and have lost CB Karson Hobbs and LB Izayia Williams for the season.

The number still isn’t inflated. SP+ rates Miami 22 points better on a neutral field, and once you add home field, a fair line is somewhere around 24 or 25. ESPN’s FPI gives the Hurricanes a 94.2 percent chance to win.

Rain, a patched-up right guard and other ways this gets soaked. First, the sky: the forecast calls for a 49 percent chance of rain, and a wet night would take some sting out of Miami’s passing game. Next, the trenches. Miami starter Max Buchanan is out for an extended stretch, so SJ Alofaituli and/or Jackson Cantwell will play right guard against a Florida State front that racked up 10 sacks in one game against Virginia. Rylan Kennedy leads that group, and Cristobal called FSU’s linemen “really, really explosive football players.” A couple of drive-killing sacks could keep the Noles close.

FSU also covered as an 18.5-point dog at Alabama after leading 21-6, and a rivalry game at Hard Rock can stay ugly longer than the ratings suggest. And 97 percent of the spread handle at DraftKings is on Miami. I don’t love being with the crowd, but I’m not fading the nation’s No. 1 scoring offense and defense because too many people agree with me.

Miami pulls away after halftime, the way it did at Clemson, where a 17-6 halftime lead turned into a 41-13 rout. Make it Miami 41, Florida State 17. Shop for -21 at BetMGM if you can find it, and anything through -23.5 still gets my money.
