Minnesota Vikings at Detroit Lions
Sunday, November 1, 2026
1:00 PM ET, Ford Field
The Lions are 3.5-point favorites and the total is 46.5. My play is the Vikings +3.5.
There is something a little funny about this number. Minnesota is 6-0, the only unbeaten team left in the league, and it is still getting more than a field goal from a Detroit team that is 1-4-1 against the spread. The market isn’t buying the Vikings’ offense, and honestly, neither am I. But this bet isn’t about Minnesota’s offense.
The Best Defense in Football Walks Into the Best Passing Attack
This is the whole game. Brian Flores has built a monster. The Vikings have allowed 74 points in six games, and by expected points added (EPA, a measure of how much each play helps or hurts a team’s scoring chances) they rank first in football on defense overall and first against the pass. Flores sends pressure from everywhere. Against Indianapolis last week he blitzed Daniel Jones on 85.2% of his dropbacks.
Jared Goff is the guy who can make that look silly. He leads the NFL with a 112.5 passer rating and still hasn’t thrown an interception. Detroit’s passing game is first in EPA per dropback, and Jahmyr Gibbs has 890 yards from scrimmage. Something has to give, and I trust the unit that hasn’t had a bad week yet.
Detroit’s Defense Is the Real Question Mark
Everybody wants to talk about Kyler Murray’s struggles, and fair enough. Minnesota ranks 29th in offensive EPA and 29th in passing yards per game, and Murray hasn’t hit 250 passing yards in a game this year. Kevin O’Connell said his team believes “we’re not far off,” which is coach-speak for “we know.”
But look at what Murray is facing. Detroit’s defense is 31st in EPA and allows a league-worst 391 yards per game. Opponents are converting 48.2% of their third downs against the Lions. Murray has been sharp on play-action, and a defense that struggles to get off the field is exactly where that can finally work.

Minnesota Already Knows This Building
The Vikings swept Detroit last season, and the first of those wins came at Ford Field, 27-24, as 9.5-point underdogs. Across both games they held Gibbs to 92 scrimmage yards on 31 touches. Minnesota is also 3-0 straight up and against the spread on the road this season. Detroit is 0-2-1 against the number at home.
The power ratings agree with me. TeamRankings has Minnesota ninth and Detroit 12th in its predictive model, and that makes 3.5 look a little rich.
Injuries to Watch
Amon-Ra St. Brown is questionable with an ankle injury, though Dan Campbell said he “should be fine.” Detroit is still without safety Kerby Joseph. On Minnesota’s side, Aaron Jones is day-to-day with a knee issue, and Jordan Mason would take the bigger share if Jones sits. The Vikings are also thin up front, with center Nick Samac and guard Donovan Jackson on IR.
What Could Go Wrong
Plenty. Minnesota rates as the luckiest team in football by TeamRankings’ luck rating, and the Star Tribune fairly pointed out that the early-season cupcakes are done. Most of those six wins were grinders. If Goff gets clean pockets against all that blitzing, the Lions can hang 30 in a hurry. And if the Vikings fall behind by two scores, this offense isn’t built to chase.
Projected Score
Lions 21, Vikings 20. Detroit’s offense gets its points, Flores keeps it out of the end zone enough times, and the hook does the rest.
