Tulane at Charlotte

7:00 PM ET, Jerry Richardson Stadium
Tulane lays 10 points on the road at Charlotte, and the total is 46.5. My play is Tulane -10.
Six turnovers. That’s what it took for UTSA to hand Tulane its first home conference loss since 2024, a 42-19 beating that snapped a 10-game home winning streak and dropped Will Hall’s first Green Wave team to 3-4. This line opened Tulane -13.5 and has been marched down to -10, the kind of move you get when bettors remember the last game and forget the other six.
Charlotte is rested and coming off its best day in two years. I’m laying the points anyway.
The market fell for the fumbles
The Tulane offense is bad, no argument. The Green Wave stay on schedule on just 33% of their snaps, 137th in the country, and the run game was a crime scene against UTSA: 67 net yards on 22 carries, and that’s with an 81-yard Johnnie Daniels burst on fourth down baked in. Hall didn’t sugarcoat it. “We are not playing well offensively,” he said. “That’s got to be fixed, and that’s got to start with me.”
But the power ratings never saw these teams as close. SP+ has Tulane 101st and Charlotte 136th, a gap worth about 17 points on a neutral field before you even talk matchups. Punt & Rally’s own number is Tulane -17.5. Six giveaways in one night bought us a discount. I’m taking it.
Charlotte can’t take the ball away, and that’s Tulane’s whole problem solved
Here’s the matchup that decides this one. Tulane’s disease is giveaways. Charlotte has no medicine for it. The 49ers have forced four turnovers in seven games, none in their last three, and their secondary ranks dead last in FBS at creating chaos: picks, breakups, the stuff that flips games. Meanwhile, Charlotte has given the ball away 16 times.
So what happens when Tulane holds onto it? Freshman Trace Johnson gets to throw against a pass defense that allows 8.9 yards per attempt, 131st in FBS, and more than 300 passing yards a game against FBS teams. Tulane hasn’t been efficient through the air, but it hits big plays, 19th nationally in explosive passing. Destyn Hill (26 catches, 339 yards) and Bredell Richardson should find grass behind this secondary.

The Niners’ feel-good story runs into a familiar wall
Charlotte went into Temple as more than a two-touchdown underdog and won 38-31, ending a 15-game losing streak and giving Albin his first win over an FBS opponent. Conner Harrell was terrific, throwing for 281 yards and accounting for four touchdowns without a pick, while Henry Rutledge ran for 123. “Our team showed grit,” Albin said, and he’s right.
Then you remember what came before Temple. Before that trip, the 49ers lost 59-8 to Memphis and 50-10 at North Texas. They’re 0-3 at home, giving up 45.3 points a game in their own building. The defense lets opponents win the down-to-down battle 48% of the time, 131st in the country.
The one place Tulane is vulnerable is its run defense, which coughs up 214 rushing yards a game. Charlotte can’t take advantage of it. The 49ers run for 93.5 yards a game against FBS teams, 129th in the country, and their line ranks near the bottom in creating yards for its backs. Harrell has to win this through the air, and Tulane knows it.
The history doesn’t help either. Tulane won 34-3 in this building in 2024 and 27-0 last season.
Why I could be wrong
Tulane is 0-3 on the road, scoring 13.3 points a game away from New Orleans, and 0-3 against the spread as a favorite. It’s playing a fourth straight week on a short turnaround, with about three real practice days. The offensive line is held together with tape. Right tackle Ryan Mickow was carted off against UTSA and reportedly isn’t expected to play, guard Elijah Baker has been out all season, and Hall said the Wave have “ended up down four O-linemen” in a tough injury year. Maurice Turner, the Wave’s most explosive back at 8.5 yards a carry, has missed two of the last three games with a hamstring problem.
Charlotte has had 13 days to prepare, and a rested team with a quarterback who just played clean football is how a big favorite gets dragged into a backdoor cover. Harrell has started the last two games, but Charlotte hasn’t announced a starter for Friday yet.
How it plays out
Tulane’s defense, which has forced 10 turnovers of its own, smothers an offense that can’t run, and the Wave’s passing game finally breathes against a secondary that rarely touches the ball. Tulane pulls away after halftime, and a team with its conference hopes on life support handles its business.
Projected score: Tulane 30, Charlotte 16
