SMU at Syracuse

SMU is a 10-point road favorite over Syracuse with a total of 58.5. My play is SMU -10.
The market fell in love with a two-point conversion. Syracuse beat North Carolina 31-30 in overtime when Steve Angeli hit Calvin Russell III for the touchdown and then again for the two, a play that needed a replay review to stand. Nice moment. This number was as high as 12.5 at the open in some spots and sits at 10 now, and I’ll gladly take the discount on the better team.
Because SMU is the better team by a lot. The Mustangs trailed Cal 20-17 at halftime last week and then won the second half 42-0. Kevin Jennings went 16-of-23 for three touchdowns and broke the school’s career touchdown pass record. Kendrick Raphael, playing his old team, scored three times. Fran Brown spent part of his Monday press conference calling Jennings a “Heisman candidate,” and that wasn’t just coach-speak.
The Orange can’t get off the field, and it’s getting worse
Syracuse’s defense was mediocre to start the year. It’s been bad lately. Over the last three games, it’s giving up far more per snap than its season average. It ranks 117th on early downs, which means offenses are living in second-and-short. It’s also near the bottom of the sport against the run and in the red zone.
That’s a nightmare draw against SMU. The Mustangs rank 13th in the country in expected points per pass and fifth on third down. They also eat up more of the field per drive than almost anyone, fourth in FBS. Jennings has 2,082 yards and 19 touchdowns, and now Raphael has taken over the backfield with Dramekco Green out. A soft run defense facing a lead back who just went for 104 yards is how a 10-point lead becomes 17.
Check the common opponents, too. SMU beat Cal by 39 and Virginia by 10. Syracuse lost to both of them, including a 21-18 home loss to Cal. Both teams lost to Louisville.

Syracuse moves the ball, then can’t finish
Syracuse’s offense isn’t helpless. Umari Hatcher is a legit problem, with 887 yards and eight touchdowns, including a 13-catch, 224-yard day against Louisville. Ahmad Miller just carried 30 times at North Carolina. But the Orange are 129th in the country in red-zone efficiency, and their kicking situation is a mess. Freshman Shay Barker has struggled, and Brown wouldn’t commit to a kicker for this week. Drives that end in missed kicks don’t cover spreads.
The quarterback room is held together with tape. Amari Odom is out for the season and Malachi Nelson is out after ankle surgery, so it’s Angeli, who’s just back from an Achilles problem, against an SMU defense that holds opponents to 27.3% on third down, fourth best in FBS. SMU has piled up more sacks than anyone in the country since 2023. Third-and-7 against that front is a bad place to be.
What could burn me. SMU hasn’t taken the ball away much, with only six turnovers forced all year, and its red-zone defense ranks 118th, so Syracuse will score some touchdowns. Hatcher can flip the game with one catch, and a 58.5 total leaves room for a late backdoor cover. SMU’s offense has also cooled slightly over the last three games, and the Mustangs have historically been shaky laying points on the road. I’d play this up to -10.5 and pass at -11 or higher.
Projected score: Jennings keeps winning on third down, Raphael grinds the clock in the second half, and the Orange settle for too many field goal tries. SMU 38, Syracuse 23.
