Minnesota at Indiana
Saturday, October 31, 2026
3:30 PM ET, Memorial Stadium, Bloomington
Indiana is a 20.5-point favorite with a total of 41.5, and my play is Minnesota +20.5.
Indiana has covered one spread all season. One. The Hoosiers are 7-1, ranked fourth, defending national champions and hosting College GameDay on Halloween, and they’re 1-7 against the number because the market keeps pricing them like the 2025 juggernaut. That team didn’t score 13 points at Michigan. This one did, and now it’s laying three touchdowns with a quarterback nursing his throwing arm.
The offense has gone quiet. Over the last three weeks, Indiana has put up 20 at Nebraska, 15 against Ohio State and 13 in overtime at Michigan. That’s 16 points a game. In Ann Arbor, Josh Hoover went 8-of-18 for 81 yards and threw his first interception as a Hoosier. Indiana gained 212 yards, went 4-of-14 on third down and didn’t score a touchdown in regulation. Hoover hurt his right arm in the second half against Ohio State, and Curt Cignetti says, “I expect him to be fine and better this week.” Maybe so. But when a Sports Illustrated columnist is openly asking whether a seventh-year backup should start instead, I’m not laying 20.5 on a full recovery.
The total says the same thing. The opener was 45.5, and it’s down to 41.5. Indiana has gone Under in three straight games, and every one of them missed by double digits. If the books expect around 41 points and Indiana needs to win by 21, the Hoosiers have to score about 31 and hold Minnesota to roughly 10. They’ve cleared 30 once in their last four games.

Minnesota is ugly in the best way. Let’s not pretend the Gophers can move the ball. They rank near the bottom of FBS in yards per play, yards per rush and yards per pass. Drake Lindsey’s dropbacks basically break even. Indiana’s defense, meanwhile, gives up 2.3 yards a carry, second in the country, and P.J. Fleck called the Hoosiers’ front “the number one D-line in the country.” Minnesota isn’t going to run it down anybody’s throat.
It doesn’t have to. Fleck’s teams win by shortening the game, and this one beat Iowa 13-10 with 209 total yards. The Gophers blocked a punt, forced four turnovers and won it on a 46-yard walk-off field goal from Luke Drzewiecki. ESPN’s FPI rates Minnesota’s special teams first in the nation. The Gophers also force two turnovers a game, ninth-best in FBS, and their defense is better than the record suggests. It ranks 35th in yards per play allowed and stays respectable against the pass. With a slow, field-position game, a dirty-uniform defense and an elite kicking unit, a 21-point spread is a lot of real estate to cover.
Minnesota is 5-2 against the spread and has won its last four meetings in this series, including a 35-21 win in Bloomington in 2021. That history won’t decide Saturday. It does tell you the Gophers won’t be intimidated by the GameDay crowd.
Why I could be wrong. This is still the better team by a mile. Indiana ranks fourth nationally in opponent-adjusted EPA margin, a measure of how much more the Hoosiers gain per snap than they give up, while Minnesota sits in the 60s. Minnesota’s two losses came by 25 and 28 points, and Mississippi State held the Gophers to 13 rushing yards in one of them. If Hoover’s arm is truly fine, Turbo Richard and Charlie Becker can break this open quickly, and Indiana hasn’t lost the turnover battle in 32 straight games. A pick-six or a short field could turn a 24-10 game into 38-10 in a hurry.
Still, I’m betting on the Indiana team from the last three Saturdays, not the one that steamrolled North Texas and Howard in September. Cignetti has a bye next week and a quarterback he needs healthy for November. Once this one is in hand, he has no reason to keep Hoover throwing in the fourth quarter.
Projected score: Indiana 27, Minnesota 10. The Hoosiers win comfortably, and the clock does the rest.
The Pick: Minnesota +20.5
