Miami at North Carolina

Miami is a 14.5-point road favorite at North Carolina with a total of 52.5. My play is Miami -14.5.
Bill Belichick doesn’t hand out compliments like candy on Halloween. So when he says Darian Mensah has “NFL-type talent” and “doesn’t get sacked, doesn’t fumble, doesn’t throw interceptions,” you should listen. He’s describing the problem. He hasn’t told anybody how he plans to solve it.
The best offense in America, and it isn’t close. Miami ranks first in the country in points, yards per play, per-play efficiency and success rate. That’s not a hot streak, that’s a sweep. Mensah is completing 81 percent of his passes with 22 touchdowns and exactly one interception. Last week he carved up Pitt for 387 yards and four scores.
His favorite target is the problem nobody in the ACC has solved. Malachi Toney caught a school-record 16 balls against Pitt and leads the league in receiving yards and touchdown catches.
Mensah also has history here. Last year, as Duke’s quarterback, he walked into Kenan and won 33-25. He’s a much better player now, with much better toys.
Carolina’s defense looks better than it plays. The Tar Heels allow under 21 points a game, which sounds respectable. Dig a little and the cracks show up. They rank 92nd in the country at stopping opponents from staying on schedule, which means teams keep moving the chains on them, and a slow pace keeps the scoreboard looking tidier than the tape. Syracuse just ran it 49 times for 199 yards in Chapel Hill and rallied in the fourth quarter to win in overtime. Two defensive backs, Kaleb Cost and Peyton Waters, didn’t play in that game. Their status this week is unknown.

Field goals won’t cut it. Belichick’s offense isn’t built to trade punches. UNC plays at one of the slowest paces in the country, ranks 98th in scoring, and has been allergic to the end zone in the red zone. Against Syracuse, the Heels had second-and-goal at the 4 with a three-point lead and came away with a field goal. “We’ve left some points out there on the field,” Belichick said. Now he gets a Miami defense that allows 15.3 points and 60 rushing yards a game. Billy Edwards Jr. is a steady game manager, but steady doesn’t keep pace with 49 a game.
And the late-game story is ugly. North Carolina scores 3.7 points per fourth quarter, which ranks 133rd in the country. When the Heels fall behind by two scores, there’s no comeback gear.
What could go wrong. The trap is obvious: Miami heads to No. 5 Notre Dame next week, and Mario Cristobal has spent this week insisting it will take “every ounce of preparation” to get past Carolina first. Big favorites peek ahead all the time. Carolina’s slow pace also shrinks the game, and fewer possessions make a two-touchdown cover harder. The Heels are 4-1 against the spread as an underdog, they lost to Notre Dame and Clemson by 11 and eight, and nearly the whole betting public is on Miami while the number has barely budged. Cristobal himself said UNC is “a couple plays away” from being undefeated. If the Heels hit a couple of explosives and win the turnover battle, this stays inside two scores.
I’ll take my chances. One projection model makes Miami a 19.5-point favorite, and the matchup backs it up. Play it at -14.5 or -15. At -15.5 it’s only a lean, and I’d pass past that.
Projected score: Miami 35, North Carolina 16. Carolina kicks a few field goals, and Mensah and Toney turn the second half into a highlight reel.
The Pick: Miami -14.5
