Northwestern at Oregon

Oregon is a 3.5-point favorite with a total of 47.5, and my play is Northwestern +3.5.

“I’m not anticipating him being back this season, no.” That was Dan Lanning on Monday, talking about Dante Moore, one day after he fired his offensive coordinator. In about 24 hours, Oregon lost its quarterback for the year and its play-caller for good. Walking into that mess is Chip Kelly, the man who turned Autzen into the loudest offensive lab in college football, now calling plays for a ranked Northwestern team that has won four straight. Halloween in Eugene doesn’t get much spookier for the Ducks.

The market has noticed. Oregon opened as a 7.5-point favorite, and it’s down to 3.5, with a few spots already showing 3. I still don’t think it has moved far enough.

The Ducks can’t get out of their own way

Oregon has scored 15, 17 and 10 points in its last three games. It turned the ball over seven times in a home loss to UCLA, needed a late comeback to beat Nebraska and then lost by 11 at Illinois as a 10.5-point favorite. Only a handful of FBS teams give the ball away more than Oregon’s two per game. Dylan Raiola, the Nebraska transfer who will likely start again, has been roughly break-even per dropback against FBS teams. He went 6-of-19 for 43 yards against UCLA. His 27-of-41 for 246 yards at Illinois looked better, but the Ducks still scored 10 points.

New play-caller Jay Johnson has run offenses at Wyoming, Michigan State and Colorado, and Lanning expects to get receivers Evan Stewart, Jalen Lott and Messiah Hampton back. That would help. Installing a new voice in the headset in five days, though, is not the same thing as fixing an offense that ranks 84th in yards per carry and 78th in ESPN’s offensive efficiency rating.

Northwestern is the opposite. Aidan Chiles, who has already played for Oregon State and Michigan State, is completing better than 71 percent of his passes with one interception all season. His average dropback adds about a third of a point to Northwestern’s expected score, which is elite territory, and 61 percent of his runs against FBS teams count as successful plays that keep the offense on schedule. Kelly has him playing fast and clean. The Wildcats give the ball away just 0.5 times a game, sixth-fewest in the country, and they ran for 413 yards on Penn State. In a game this close to the number, the team that doesn’t hand over the ball has a massive edge, and the Ducks have handed it over plenty.

The Wildcats’ defense also travels. It holds opponents to 16.6 points a game and allows 5.9 yards per pass attempt, top 10 nationally. Without Moore, Oregon has to win through the air with a quarterback who can’t consistently do it.

What could go wrong

Oregon’s defense is the real deal. ESPN rates it eighth in the country, and Matayo Uiagalelei has six sacks. Northwestern’s line has been leaky, allowing sacks on more than 8 percent of dropbacks, so a couple of drive-killing sacks are realistic. Northwestern’s run defense is also its soft spot at 4.8 yards a carry, so if Jordon Davison gets going, Oregon can shorten the game. And let’s be honest about the Wildcats’ résumé. Their best win is Penn State, and they’ve feasted on Colorado, Ball State and Rutgers. The one time they stepped up against an elite team, they lost by six at Indiana. ESPN’s FPI still rates Oregon higher, though much of that rating comes from games Moore played.

I’ll take the team with the hot quarterback, the clean ball security and the coordinator who knows every inch of this stadium. Oregon’s offense has to prove it can score 24 before I lay points with it.

Projected score: Northwestern 24, Oregon 20. Chiles makes one more play than Raiola, and Kelly gets the last laugh in his old building.

The Pick: Northwestern +3.5
