Pat Kelsey’s Cards opened with an 84-70 win over Chattanooga, and the coach was still mad afterward. That tells you everything about where this rebuild sits. Louisville returned roughly a tenth of last year’s scoring, stocked the roster with portal stars Flory Bidunga, Jackson Shelstad and Seth Trimble, and still looked more workmanlike than ruthless in Game 1. Bidunga posted 16 and 9. The margin was 14 — not 40.

KenPom still has the Cardinals around the top 25 with a roughly 38-point efficiency edge over Morehead State (AdjM gap near +38), and early-season ratings lean hard on preseason priors. Live projections tell a softer story: independent models land closer to Louisville by about 30–31, which is a full touchdown of ATS value on the Eagles. The market moved from the mid-36s into 37.5; the dog still looks like the side.
Morehead State is 1-1 after an 83-58 thrashing at Western Kentucky and a 114-60 dunking of Virginia-Lynchburg. Clayton Parker has led the scoring. They are not walking into the Yum! Center to steal a win — Louisville owns this series 32-12 and has taken 27 of the last 29 — but covering 37.5 does not require an upset. It requires the Eagles to stay upright while Louisville empties the bench.

Two missing pieces and a slow burn.
De’Shayne Montgomery is out four to six weeks with a foot injury. Seven-five center Gabe Dynes is sidelined at least four months after shoulder surgery. That thins the second unit on a roster already learning new chemistry. Louisville can still smother Morehead’s adjusted defense (bottom-20 nationally in KenPom), but the path to covering a near-40 spread usually needs a full-press first half and a deep bench that keeps scoring. The Cards have not proven that gear yet.
Tempo also leans the dog’s way a touch. Louisville wants to push (adjusted tempo near 73); Morehead lives slower (near 69). If the Eagles chew clock and trade half-court possessions, the final margin compresses. That is how +37.5 cashes even when the favorite wins going away.
What could go wrong.
Louisville forced 18 turnovers against Chattanooga. If Morehead coughs it up at that rate inside a hostile Yum! Center, the lead can hit 40 before garbage time starts. Bidunga on the glass and Shelstad from deep could also turn the first 12 minutes into a runway. Early samples are tiny — one game each for both sides against real competition — so the KenPom prior still matters more than usual.
