Arizona at Texas Tech
Saturday, October 31, 2026
12:00 PM ET, Galaxy Stadium, Lubbock, TX

Texas Tech is a 3.5-point favorite over Arizona with a total of 54.5. My play is Arizona +3.5.

Here’s the stat that should make Red Raider fans nervous: Cincinnati beat Texas Tech by 13 last week, and Arizona beat that same Cincinnati team 34-7 on Oct. 3. College football doesn’t work like math class, but that’s a loud data point. I’m taking the points with the hotter team and the better quarterback.

Texas Tech is coming off a wake-up call. The Red Raiders went to Cincinnati ranked eighth in the country and got buried, down 24-6 at halftime before losing 37-24. That ended a school-record nine-game conference winning streak. Joey McGuire took the blame himself, calling his failure to use Tommy Castellanos “a total failure by my part,” and described Will Hammond’s season as a “roller coaster.” When a coach is talking about quarterback packages on a Monday in late October, the offense isn’t where he wants it.

Noah Fifita is where Arizona wants him. He’s thrown for 2,064 yards and 18 touchdowns while completing about 74% of his passes, and he’s thrown a touchdown pass in 20 straight conference games. Arizona has won five in a row, including a 39-3 beatdown of Iowa State in which Fifita threw for 308 yards. The Wildcats have a quarterback who never seems rattled, and they know it.

The matchup that decides it: Arizona’s passing game against Tech’s soft spot. Texas Tech is stout against the run, but it gives up 266.1 passing yards a game, one of the worst marks in the country. Arizona throws for 310.9 a game, ninth nationally. Even with Tre Spivey lost for the year, this is a passing attack that keeps the chains moving when it matters. Arizona is also one of the best third-down offenses in FBS, and the advanced numbers back that up on obvious passing downs too. That’s the stuff that wins road games. It also keeps a home crowd quiet.

Tech’s offense keeps stalling where it counts. The Red Raiders score 35.9 points a game, but they’ve been one of the worst teams in the country at finishing drives. By the per-play efficiency numbers they rank 120th in the red zone, and they’re only middle of the pack overall. Hammond has not thrown more than one touchdown pass in any game this season. Now he gets an Arizona defense that ranks fifth in the nation in success rate, meaning it wins down after down. It’s also top 10 in red-zone defense and gets after the quarterback. Brent Brennan called this “a huge line of scrimmage game,” and his front is built for it.

There’s a homecoming twist, too. Arizona offensive coordinator Seth Doege played quarterback at Texas Tech. He knows the building, and he knows exactly what kind of game plan makes Lubbock go silent.

Why I could be wrong. Texas Tech’s defense is a turnover machine. It has forced 10 takeaways in its last four games and leads FBS with five defensive touchdowns, including a pick-six in four straight games. Arizona’s turnover margin is -2, and its line has been leaky, 105th in sacks allowed. One tipped ball turned into seven the other way flips this whole thing. Tech has also won 12 straight at home, and Arizona is 1-13 all-time in Lubbock. The other worry is the price. This line has already moved several points toward Arizona since it opened, so the market agrees with me and the easy value is gone. I’ll still play +3. At +2.5 I’d rather take the moneyline.

Projected score. Arizona converts the big third downs, Tech settles for field goals one too many times, and Fifita takes the lead late. Arizona 27, Texas Tech 24.

The Pick: Arizona +3.5
