Georgia is an 11.5-point favorite with the total at 55.5. My play is Georgia -11.5 (-112).
For the first time ever, the Cocktail Party moves indoors to Atlanta, deep in Georgia, the home state of Bulldogs quarterback Gunner Stockton. Jon Sumrall called it “more road-ish,” and he’s being polite. Florida is walking into a building Georgia knows well, without a named starting quarterback, against a team that’s had two weeks to stew over a loss.
That loss matters. Auburn stunned Georgia 27-24 in Athens on Oct. 17, and history says Kirby Smart doesn’t let that sit. His Bulldogs are 17-3 after a loss and 12-3 coming off a bye, and they haven’t dropped back-to-back regular-season games since 2016. Georgia has won five straight in this series, and Smart is 8-2 against the Gators overall.
Georgia’s offense is a buzzsaw, and Florida’s defense bleeds
This is the mismatch that decides the game. Georgia scores more points per snap than anyone in the country and converts nearly 53% of its third downs. Stockton is completing 74% of his passes with 16 touchdowns and four picks, and his efficiency rating ranks second nationally. The same five offensive linemen have started every game, and they’ve allowed just eight sacks all season. The Dawgs are also brutal early, outscoring opponents 87-14 in the first quarter.
Florida’s defense is a different story. The Gators allow nearly 35 points per game in SEC play, rank 124th in stopping third downs and 125th in defensive success rate, which basically means opponents stay on schedule against them almost every series. Missouri hung 45 on them. South Carolina hung 38. Sumrall admitted this week there’s “a good football team in here somewhere that hasn’t been consistent enough.” Saying that out loud during Georgia week tells you plenty.
Measured by how often each team wins a snap, Georgia comes out ahead more than all but six teams in the country. Florida loses it more often than it wins it.

The Gators also have a quarterback question nobody outside the building can answer. Aaron Philo (1,341 yards, nine touchdowns, three picks) started the first six games before a shoulder injury. Tramell Jones Jr. stepped in at Texas and led a gutsy 27-24 upset, but his longest completion was 17 yards and he finished with 155 passing yards. Sumrall says both are available, both are banged up to some degree, and he won’t make a formal announcement. Whoever starts gets the SEC’s top scoring defense (15.9 points per game) and a linebacker pair of Chris Cole and Raylen Wilson. “You turn the tape and he jumps out,” Sumrall said of Cole.
What could go wrong
Georgia isn’t fully healthy. Star safety KJ Bolden missed the Auburn game with a foot injury, and his replacement, Ja’Marley Riddle, missed four tackles against the Tigers. Receiver Isiah Canion is still out, and running back Chauncey Bowens is sidelined, though Nate Frazier is back. Stockton also had a shoulder stinger against Auburn.
The bigger worry is quarterbacks who run. Auburn’s Byrum Brown ran for 115 yards on this defense, and across the last two games Georgia allowed 353 rushing yards on 75 carries. Jones is a real runner, and Jadan Baugh (763 yards, 13 touchdowns) is a bowling ball who ran for 233 combined yards in the wins over Ole Miss and Texas. Florida has covered in three of the last four meetings, special teams is a strength, and there’s a backdoor risk with Georgia’s trip to Ole Miss next week waiting.
I’ll live with that. Georgia’s efficiency edge here is enormous, the Dawgs are 5-2 against the spread, and an angry Smart team after two weeks of film sessions is not who you want to see in your first rivalry game. Laying it up to -13.5 is fine with me.
