Miami opens the ACC season Friday night at Stanford as 24.5-point favorites with a total of 48.5. The value here is on the road team getting the points.

Start with what Stanford has already done. The Cardinal beat Hawaii 37-27 last Saturday in Tavita Pritchard’s debut as head coach. That’s a legitimate win over a Group of Six opponent, and it means Stanford enters Friday’s game with a full week of live game reps, working chemistry, and identifiable strengths on tape. Miami hasn’t played a snap yet. They’ve been in fall camp for a month, but there’s a real difference between practice reps and game speed. That advantage matters in Week 1.

The travel factor is the other piece the market isn’t fully pricing in.

Miami has to fly from South Florida to Palo Alto — three time zones and about 2,600 miles. The game kicks off at 9 pm ET, which is 6 pm local. For Miami’s players, whose body clocks are still on Eastern time, this game finishes well after midnight in their normal rhythm. Coaches and players talk about it constantly. West Coast late games against East Coast teams have historically produced closer results than the market prices in. Stanford was 4-2 at home last year, and their home crowd will be waking up for a marquee ACC opponent while Miami’s players are trying to stay sharp deep into a late-night game.

There’s a specific track record for ACC teams going to Palo Alto too. Florida State came to Stanford Stadium in Week 6 of 2025 as an 17.5-point favorite and lost 20-13. Boston College similarly struggled here. East Coast programs making the trip west to Stanford tend to underperform their pre-game numbers.

Stanford also has real offensive talent working in their favor. They put up 37 against Hawaii, which showed the offense can move the ball. Pritchard came from Washington’s staff before taking the Stanford job, and he’s been installing an aggressive passing scheme. If Stanford scores in the 20s again — which is realistic given they just scored 37 — they’re in position to keep the game inside 24.5.

Miami is the better team. That’s not in question. Carson Beck runs an offense that finished second nationally in scoring last season, and Miami has NFL-caliber talent at every skill position. They’ll win. But winning by 25+ is a big ask in Week 1 on the road, at night, after cross-country travel, against a team that already has a game under its belt.

The realistic Miami win in this spot is 34-17 or 31-14. Both cover under 24.5. For the Hurricanes to hit -24.5, they need Stanford to score in single digits, which contradicts everything Stanford just showed against Hawaii.

I considered the total. Over 48.5 has a real case if Stanford scores in the 20s again and Miami puts up 30+, which would push the total to 50-55. That’s defensible. But the situational factors work more cleanly on the side.

The Pick: Stanford Cardinal +24.5
