Virginia at No. 24 SMU
Saturday, October 17, 2026
12:00 PM ET, Gerald J. Ford Stadium, Dallas

SMU is a 9.5-point favorite with the total at 51.5. My play is Virginia +9.5.

Against FBS opponents this season, SMU has won by 3, lost by 10, won by 10, and won by 9. Exactly one of those four results covers 9.5. You’re being asked to lay nearly two scores with a Mustangs team that almost never finishes games that way, and the models agree the number has gone too far.

Cleatz’s SP+ projection makes SMU about a touchdown favorite, and both Game on Paper and TeamRankings grade these teams as close to even. The market opened at SMU -6.5 and got shoved past the key number of 7 by Monday, mostly a reaction to Virginia’s ugly-then-gutsy escape against Syracuse. Tuesday’s Cavalier injury news didn’t push it any further. That move past 7 is the gift. At +9.5, SMU can win this game and I can still cash.

Jennings meets the one defense built for him

Kevin Jennings runs the show in Dallas. He’s completing 75% of his passes through five games, and Tony Elliott raved this week about “the whole Mahomes arm-slot stuff.” Jennings also shredded Virginia for 323 yards in SMU’s 33–7 rout at Scott Stadium in 2024. That memory is a big reason the market loves this number.

Here’s the counter. Virginia leads the ACC in pass defense, and opponents’ dropbacks succeed only about a third of the time against them, which is second-best in the country. Even with corner Omillio Agard lost for the season to a torn ACL and safety Brandyn Hillman a game-time decision with an ankle injury, this is the unit best equipped to keep Jennings from turning Ford Stadium into a track meet.

SMU’s run defense is the softer door. Louisville ran for 265 yards and four touchdowns in the Mustangs’ only loss, and SMU ranks 107th nationally at stopping the run on a down-to-down basis. Virginia runs for 163 yards a game with Beau Pribula keepers and the Jekail Middlebrook/Zay Davis tandem. Elliott calls SMU’s offense “kind of like basketball on grass,” and the best way to beat a fast-break team is to keep it on the bench. Long drives mean fewer possessions, and fewer possessions are an underdog’s best friend.

SMU’s own backfield is thin, too. Dramekco Green is out three to four weeks with a broken hand, and Christian Rhodes is expected to make his season debut after a hamstring issue. Expected, not confirmed. The Mustangs can still throw it, but the balance that buries an opponent by 17 is harder to find when the run game is patched together.

Virginia travels like a busted suitcase

Virginia is 0-2 away from Scott Stadium, beaten by West Virginia in Charlotte and flattened 38–7 at Florida State, and TeamRankings rates its road form among the worst in the country. ACC teams are 0-9 against SMU in Dallas since the Mustangs joined the league in 2024. SMU is rested off a bye, while Virginia flies in Friday for an 11 a.m. local kickoff without receiver Rico Flores Jr. or defensive end Devon Baxter.

The bigger worry is the money downs. SMU converts more than half its third downs, Virginia barely three in 10, and the Cavaliers give up three-plus sacks a game. If Hillman sits and Jennings gets clean pockets, +9.5 can vanish the way it did in Charlottesville two Novembers ago. I still want the points. I just wouldn’t chase them below +8.5.

Where I land: SMU 28, Virginia 21, a Mustangs win that never gets comfortable.

The Pick: Virginia +9.5
