After taking the first two games of this NL Central rivalry series the Cubs shoot for the sweep of the Cardinals Sunday night on national TV at Wrigley Field. How are we betting this game with our free MLB pick?

MLB Betting Odds

Sunday’s MLB betting odds opened Chicago and Hendricks at around -155 over St. Louis and Wainwright while holding off on posting an over/under. Early betting action then bumped that line about a dime, to around -165.

Cardinals vs. Cubs Set-Up

Chicago took the opener of this series Friday afternoon 3-1, then won Saturday’s game 9-4. The Cubs cashed in as -125 favorites on the MLB betting line Friday, then won as +100 home dogs Saturday.

Also, while Friday’s game played under a total of 7.5 runs, Saturday’s game played over that same total.

With Saturday’s victory, Chicago is 5-1 over its last six games.

With Saturday’s loss, St. Louis is 5-3 over its last eight games.

At 36-27 overall the Cubs are tied with Milwaukee for the lead in the NL Central, 4.5 games ahead of the 31-31 Cardinals.

Chicago now leads the season series with St. Louis five games to three.

The home team is now 8-0 in Cards-Cubs games this season.

Sunday’s Starting Arms

This pitching match-up is a rematch of a game played last September also at Wrigley, an 8-4 Chicago victory.

Hendricks, by our strict standards, is 6/12 on quality starts this season two for his last three. Tuesday he held Colorado to three runs and six hits through seven innings, with 10 strikeouts, in a 6-3 Cubs win. And over his last three starts, he’s allowed seven runs and 16 hits through 21 innings, with 26 strikeouts against just three walks.

Chicago is 7-5 with Hendricks this season, 6-1 over his last seven starts.

Over his last five starts against St. Louis, four previous seasons and a complete-game shutout back in May of this season, Hendricks allowed 10 runs and 31 hits through 34 2/3 innings. The Cubs won all five of those games.

Wainwright is also 6/12 on quality starts this season, but only one for his last four. Last Sunday he held this Chicago outfit scoreless on two hits through eight innings of a 2-1 Cardinals victory. But over his three starts previous to that he gave up 12 runs and 19 hits through 15 innings.

St. Louis is 6-6 with Wainwright this year, 2-1 over his last three outings.

Over his last four starts against the Cubbies, two last year and two already this year, Wainwright allowed 10 earned runs and 16 hits through 23 innings. The Cardinals split those four games.

Saturday’s Batting Splits

St. Louis is batting .252/.331/.413 against right-handed pitching this season. But this lineup has also been held to three runs or less seven times in its last 10 games.

Chicago is batting .257/.344/.456 against right-handed pitching this season.

The Bullpens

The Cardinals bullpen owns a 4.04 ERA this season and a 1.19 WHIP, which ranks this unit among the top seven reliever corps in the Majors at the moment.

The Cubs pen owns a 4.16 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP.

Totals Report

  • Unders are 31-28 in Cardinals games this season.
  • Overs are 34-28 in Cubs games this season.
  • Totals are split 4-4 in Cardinals-Cubs games this season.
  • Overs are a combined 15-8 in games started by Hendricks and Wainwright this season.
  • Unders are 17-16 in games played at Wrigley Field this season.

Free MLB Pick

Chicago owns the edge in the pitching match-up and with the bats, so we like the Cubbies here. And we also like chasing better prices so we’ll give the run and a half with the Cubs against the run line.
