Cleveland Cavaliers at Philadelphia 76ers

The 76ers are 3.5-point favorites with the total at 235.5. My play is the Cavaliers +3.5.
Of all the teams to welcome LeBron James to Philadelphia, the schedule makers picked the one from his own backyard.
Thursday is the Sixers’ home opener and James’ first game in front of the Philly crowd after signing a two-year deal this summer. Plenty of people expected him to end up back in Cleveland. Instead, his hometown team gets to walk into his new house on the night it throws him a welcome party. It’s great theater. It’s also the kind of night that pushes a betting line a little further than it should go.
One win at the Garden doesn’t erase four losses to Cleveland. Give Philadelphia its due. The Sixers crashed the Knicks’ ring night on Tuesday and won 106-100, with Tyrese Maxey scoring 28 and Jaylen Brown adding 19 in his debut. But look at how they did it. Philly went 11-of-40 from three, and James and Joel Embiid combined to shoot 9-of-28. That was a grind-it-out road win over a Knicks team that shot 37% from the field, not a statement.
Brown said it best afterward: “We’re not even at the tip of the iceberg in terms of chemistry, understanding ourselves on the floor, understanding our spacing.” He’s right, and spacing is the problem Cleveland is built to punish. The Sixers made shots at the fifth-worst rate in the league last season, adjusting for the extra value of threes, and neither James nor Brown shot better than 35% from deep a year ago. Those two are drivers and post-up scorers, not floor-spacers.
Meanwhile, Cleveland went 4-0 against Philadelphia last season, and two of those games weren’t close: 132-121 and 133-107.

Harden and Mitchell are a problem for a thin Philly bench. The Cavs scored 119.2 points per 100 possessions last season, sixth in the NBA, while Philly sat in the middle of the pack on both ends and basically broke even. Cleveland was simply the better team, and the core is intact.
Donovan Mitchell (27.9 points per game) is back, and this is James Harden’s first full season in wine and gold. After coming over from the Clippers at the deadline, Harden hit 43.5% of his threes for Cleveland. That’s a two-headed backcourt Philly has to guard on every possession.
Harden isn’t hiding what he’s after. “The only thing I’m missing is a championship,” he said. Jarrett Allen put it even more bluntly: “Can’t run from anything now. This is our time to go and show what we’re made of. It’s now or never.”
Then there’s Peyton Watson, the Cavs’ big summer pickup from Denver. He averaged 14.6 points and hit 41.1% from deep last season, and he gives Kenny Atkinson a long, switchy wing to throw at Brown. Philly’s depth, by contrast, is already being tested. Dean Wade (ankle) is only questionable, and Tacko Fall, Dominick Barlow and Ariel Hukporti are all out. Nick Nurse leaned on Anfernee Simons and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope off the bench on Tuesday, and that’s a short list against a team with two lead guards who can each run an offense.
The part that keeps me up at night
The big worry is Allen. He was added to the injury report Wednesday as questionable with patellar tendinopathy, better known as jumper’s knee. If he sits, Evan Mobley slides to center and Embiid gets a softer night on the glass. Khalifa Diop is also out, so Cleveland’s size is thin either way.
Rust is real, too. This is Cleveland’s first game that counts, while Philly has already shaken off its opening-night nerves. ESPN’s matchup model gives the Sixers a 70.8% chance to win. And Cleveland was a bad bet a year ago, covering just 40% of the time. A home crowd riding a LeBron sugar high can turn a close game into a 10-point win in a hurry.
Grab the hook before it disappears. This line was 2.5 in early previews and has climbed to 3.5, with most of the market sitting there. That move is about one win and one injury tag, and I’m happy to collect the extra point. I’d play the Cavs down to +3 and pass at +2.5. If Allen is ruled out and the number jumps to +4.5, I’d still be in.
Projected score: Cleveland walks out with a narrow upset, Cavaliers 116, 76ers 113.
The Pick: Cavaliers +3.5 (-112)
